Predator 500 for desert riding

Recently picked up an 03 TLD Predator 500 with low hours for cheap($1000). My first desert trip was not a good time with it and I parked it. The ride was horribly rough. I'm comparing it to a 07 LTZ400 that has a-arms, extended swingarm, LTR450 front shocks and wider rear hubs so it's not exactly apples to apples. Anyway, I recently took it out to the desert again to give it a shakedown run and was less than thrilled with handling. The problem i'm having with the Predator is it's very squirrely. I replaced the ball joints and aligned the front end. I also put LTR450 front shocks on it so I have some adjustment. The Fox front shocks were horribly stiff with no adjustments. I also backed off of the rear shock rebound and preload. These helped the ride considerably but the bike still darts around on the trail. I've come to the conclusion that the Predator was designed as a tight trail/MX quad and not something best suited for high speed off-road. Now with that said, what can be done to get this thing to track straight?
