2005 had an ecm recall that could cause all sort of problems.Original ones were Chinese and were a black finned module located under the front panel. Even if it's been replaced with the silver module, the replacement American made Shure Power modules could fail also. Some would loose power, others wouldn't keep batteries charged or fans operating. Plus any short could stop one in its tracks as it has several circuit breakers built into it. This is the first thing I'd check.Huge ATV Recall by Polaris - Sportsman and Scrambler Other than that it could just be something you're over looking. A good manual can help you on trouble shooting especially electrical and testing the ecm module along with other repairs and service. Here's a cheap pdf service manual for 5 bucks. 2005 Polaris Sportsman 500 Service Manual PDF Download

In addition to the ecm causing problems,if the starter rope broke all it takes is to have the pulse coil knocked out of place a little by the rope or other parts and even though it may have spark, may not be strong enough to start it. Here's one members encounter on this. Again the manual I referenced will help also.http://forums.atvconnection.com/pola...ml#post3155476

All circuit breakers are in the ecm module. Many people have posted in the past that they were able to recoil start, but not electric start the 500. You can pull the plug, ground to the cylinder, crank the engine over and shows spark. But may loose spark when you reinstall the plug. The reason why on many of these people problems is that with the plug out the engine can rotate fast enough to generate a spark, but with the plug back in the engine has more resistance and the starter may not turn it fast enough to spark, but with the recoil start right at the source (the flywheel) you can get more torque and speed on it allowing the engine to crank. Confused a lot of people. Since he doesn't have the recoil,no way to tell, but to check the gap at the pulse coil against the fly wheel,IF it's not an ecm problem, carb problem or fuel supply, tight valves, etc. http://www.cyclepartswarehouse.com/f...005&fveh=39672
