I'm going to try to get an atv this fall (a SP. 500 or Prairie 650) and was wondering what it would cost to insure it. Does anyone know where I can get insurance quotes online? What companies have atv insurance? What do you guys/girls pay to insure your atv?

ANDREW, TRY QUOTESMITH.COM I PAY $99 PER YEAR, BUT EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. IT GOES BY WHAT MACHINE YOU ARE INSURING AND YOUR DRIVING RECORD. I HAVE A CLEAN RECORD AND A 300 XPLORER. THE BIGGER MACHINES ARE WORTH MORE SO EXPECT TO PAY MORE.

Stay away from Progressive. They are as crooked as they get.

I called them for insurance on my Kodiak. They quoted me $203 a year. I clearly told them what it was ie: an atv. They called me a few days later, and claimed I told them it was a motorcycle, and that I was trying to commit insurance fraud. They did tell me, however, that for another $200, they would cover it. I told them to pound salt you know where, and told them I expected a full refund on my Visa no later than the next day, and that they were crooks. They didn't deny a thing.

 

Don't forget to check with your auto insurance company. I use Nationwise and got my ATV insured through them for 140/yr, as an attachment to my auto insurance. Think my ded is 250 with full liability and collision/theft and property damage. Based on what I've seen other owners paying you should be staying well under 175/yr-not a bad deal to protect a $5000-$7000 machine!
My main reason for getting insurance was theft protection.

 

$80 a year, full coverage. Farmers Insurance.

 

We have coverage on two a 99 SP500 and '96 Sport for $172 and $192. Full coverage with $500 collision, $100 comp, uninsured and underinsured, med. payments and $100/300,00. It's the same as a full coverage auto policy. Progressive has some better rates, but only about $35 per year on each one. Ours are thru Erie Insurance. They won't cover unless you hae auto policies thru them also.

A tip about Progressive Insurance. If you get quotes directly from them or on-line the rates are much higher than going thru an independent agency. They assume a higher risk and the rates reflect that online. Our two street bikes have the same full coverages the 2001 V-Star 1100 Classic is $535 and the '97 Bandit 1200 is $430, both excellent rates thru Bortz Insurance in Greeneville, PA who writes polcies for Progressive. The only way to get a quote is with the proper vin number.

I normally would not carry such full coverage on the atv's, but I have many people ride these machines throughout the year and want to make sure "I'm" protected in the event of a mishap. Saw a wild one two years ago where an atv got away from a rider and he fell off. It crossed the highway and was struck by a Ford pickup which proceeded to roll over. This kid was 15 years old and though he wasn't hurt, his parents will be paying for damages to the truck and medical payments for a long, long time since his dad had no insurance coverage on the atv.

 

I use Nationwide and pay $66 a year for full coverage with a $50 deduc. Try adding it on with your auto insurance you will most likely get a better deal that way
