Best brake pads for a 99 SP500?
#3
pflueeb,
You ask, you get ...
EBC sintered metallic pads. They are very tough compared to the Polaris pads. The fronts are EBC number FA159R (2 packs required, 1 set per side) and the backs are EBC number FA270R (1 pack required). Any motorcycle shop or ATV shop can get them. I use a local Honda dealer for them.
Some here recommend the all brass pads from Gary Box (his name here in the forum is brasspad). Personally I am not convinced. They say they last well but the stopping power is reduced. No thanks.
The best shop manual is the Polaris manual. It is very well illustrated and packed with information. It covers all Sportsman 500 and 335 models up to 2000 (except the diesel). It is Polaris part number 9915686 and costs about $30.
The parts manual is Polaris part number 9915480. It is also available on-line at the Polaris web site (the service manual is not).
How about Bob for a screen name instead? Much easier! LOL

Deej: talk about a FANTASTIC response! thank you very much for taking the time to do that. Very kind of you.
You know, I've been asking my dealer for a shop manual for YEARS! He just keeps saying they're back-ordered! I had no other choice than to download the free .pdf file from Polaris' website...
Any ideas where I can find a shop manual? Does it have instructions on how to do things or just tech drawings? I'll order one from YOUR dealer if I have to!
Thanks again!
Bob

Bob,
Lots of step by step stuff in the manual. Also well illustrated so you can get the "big" picture before you dig into anything. Wiring diagrams etc etc.
Interestingly my dealer didn't know about this manual. He said there was only a big expensive Polaris Master Repair Manual for hundreds of dollars. I contacted Polaris and they gave me the part number for this Sportsman specific manual for tens of dollars. It is an excellent manual.
I gave the part number to the dealer, he ordered it, and the rest is history. I say give the dealer the number, tell him it is a widget, and I bet you get the manual in a week!
Many here have ordered this manual with no problems.
Short of that, try a new dealer.
I have a good friend just outside of Pittsburg. Sure is some nice hilly terrain to run the ATV down there. I have yet to take mine down but have borrowed his when we visit. I need to be independently wealthy so I can cruise the countryside with the Sportsman in tow. What a life that would be.
Good luck with the manual.

I'm also having a heck of a time finding a shop manual for my 2000 xplor 400 4x4.I only have 1 dealer any where close to my area , and the last time I brought it there it was a @##$$ disaster never again. I called Clymer books. Do you know anything about their shop manuals? They say they won't have any till the end of may-june.

I had the rear pads from Gary box on my 00 Xplorer.I highly recommend them. They stop as well as any brand pad out there today and will out last any other pad AT LEAST 2-1.
I am not yet certain about the brass front pads?I have a set being made for me as we speak.I am going to run some tests to see if my ATV stops in the same distance as before with his front brass pads vs non brass pads,I'll be certain to post my findings,

this may be escaping me, but has someone posted step by step instructions already here about changing the brakes in a 1999 SP500? I do believe I saw it once, but the SEARCH capabilities on this website leave something to be desired! (Im just kidding administrators)
Note: Think how cool it would be if this website started posting its own TRIED and PROVEN repair guidelines/instructions....THIS IS AN IDEA GUYS!
Also, I tore my ATV apart yesterday to clean all of the Cochranton off of it and discovered I need to replace the rubber thingies on my rear stabilizer (stabilizer bushings). Has anyone done this?
