Default new to me 2002 425 xpedition

Hey guys im leaving in a couple hours to pick up the 425 xpedition. deals done and im getting it now but wanted to see what you guys thought of this atv im looking to use it for hunting and just light riding not bogging or anything like that i do know that the thing runs and acts like it is starving for fuel when you give it gas but im thinking it is just the carb needs cleaning cause it has been sitting. i also know that the front left cv axle is out of it and the guy says it hasnt had one since he got the thing 4 years ago. im unfamiliar with how the axle slides into the front diff. and am hoping that it is sealed and not full of crap since it has been gone so long and the guy let his kids ride it. How bad is it to install the new axle? also is a 2002 effected by the recall way back when and does it have a solid cam or is it the soft one. thanks in advance guys

David

Always expect the unexpected on a machine like this.Engines are good, but takes 5.5 quarts of oil! Sometimes the reverse module fails, but you can pull the lever lever on the transmission and do it manually if you don't want to replace the module. Has plenty of grease fittings including an almost hidden coupler from the gear case to the rear diff that's hard to grease through the hole in the rear box frame. Front drive shaft has a pin that knocks out to replace the drive shaft, plus you have 4 bearings, coil, armature plate in the front hub that have to be removed and serviced when you replace it. This is the oem part here, but you can find them cheaper.Dirt Cheap Yamaha & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse If it's been sitting it's going to need a carb repair kit. Plenty of them on ebay.Takes the same kit as the Magnum 425. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-SHINDY-CARBURETOR-CARB-REBUILD-REPAIR-KIT-FOR-POLARIS-425-MAGNUM-1995-98-/281470898613?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4188f911b5&vxp=mtrBest thing you can have is a manual. Here's one for 5 bucks that can help you on service and repairs.2002 Polaris Xpedition 425 Service Manual PDF Download

Thanks for all the info I got it home seems to idle fine but stumbles under load I'm going to clean the carb and see what it does for it. Looks like I'm going to need the front axle and a dash plus the carb work also the brakes don't work but the pedal and lever have pressure so I'm going to have to look into that as well thanks for the info again if ya think of any info that might help I sure appreciate it

The manual can help you more than anything. Well worth getting one. Good luck on the repairs.

This where the manual link I posted helps the most. The wiring schematic at the end of the manual can help you trace/repair all the wiring that's been tampered with.

Default coil bad?

ok so i have nothing coming from the coil but if i unplug the wire from the cdi to the coil and hook up my meter i get current when cranking. this leads me to belive that the coil would be my issue because i have power and all from cdi to coil when cranking. correct or not. this is after alot of wire tracing and all and you were right the manual helps alot.

Go a little deeper in the manual and get the resistance specs for the stator wiring going to the cdi. Most coils primary resistance ( coil tab to ground) should ohm out around .03-.05 range. Secondary(plug wire to coil tab) should be around 6300 ohms, but your manual may show different. Again the stator may be the problem or pick up coil(97 ohms resistance) and may not be sending enough to the cdi itself.Plus may be as simple as pulling the recoil cover and cleaning the face of the pick up coil and flywheel.Could be filled with dirt/mud over the years that could be the problem.

I have the same quad that I bought a year ago and really like it. Definetly get a repair manual as it has GREAT troubleshooting info. I can't remember if I got mine off eBay or recpairinfo, but they should both have electronic copies you can immediately download. I currently have my carb apart to troubleshoot a mid-range issue which I couldn't sort out with tuning. Turned out someone assembled the needle assy wrong. Shifting doesn't work the greatest on mine, so I'll check the clutches after the rest of the quad is back together.

Oh and yes the recall would be applicable if it hasn't already been done. The brakes are said to not be the greatest on these, but they do the job for me with enough squeezing.
