Default 2001 Polaris 400 scrambler

I have a 400 Polaris 400 scrambler that will not charge! I have tried a used regulator and still no change. If I rev it up the volts drop then go back up and settle back to normal im not getting 13 volts. I have a question it has an exciter coil is this so the atv just runs and not charge or is this part of the charging system? Or is the stator itself bad? Anyone know how to test this system? Or what my problem is it starts and runs fine just know theres different charging systems on these 400s.

The exciter(trigger coil) is for the ignition system. The main stator is for charging and lighting. You can test the stators yellow and yellow red to each other, should not zero out, plus neither one should short(zero out) to ground. If either wire does, then the main stator is faulty.Problem is that you have to get the stator and trigger coil assy. If you're sure that it's not a regulator problem, these stators are becoming kinda hard to find if you search for only a 2001 model 400,but the part number does share different year models that can help. The trigger coil can be found easier on ebay as many fit all the 250,300,350 and 400 models.
Usage : 3084785 This is the latest part number for the stator assy.

Some used ones on ebay, plus even Caltric may have them, but not showing up. Looks like your pic shows to be Caltric stator for your model. Most online places are NLA.Item#7.http://www.cheapcycleparts.com/oempa...ea4054/magneto

I did notice there are two types of stators for the 400s can I use the other or do I need to use the one for the 2001?

So the red wire and yellow wires should have some resistance between each other and should be open to ground correct?

Should be resistance between the yellow and yellow/red(yellow with a red stripe,NOT the solid red wire.) 2001,2002 and the the last 400 made, the 2003 Sport 400 used your type ignition as the 2 stroke 400 was be phased out of production. The Explorer 400 used the newer type magneto with the external pick up coil, but the stator plate is different along with the flywheel. Unless some aftermarket companies have changed to the later type ignition, you'll probably have to stay with your system.
