Well, I've got the RCR Stage 1 kit and love it. Now I'm thinking about taking the next step and I want some suggestions. What do you guys think my next mod should be and why? I'm thinking either clutch kit or reeds. Keep in mind, most of my riding is wooded trails with the occasional trip to the MX track. TIA

Hi AK,

Sorry, I'm not going to be much help, but I actually have a question for you. What Pipe did you go with on your Stage 1 kit? I ride the trails most of the time also, but that Top-End pipe really looks apealing. I just don't know what kind of negative impact (if any) it could have on my quad. Thanks for the help. Oh also, I don't know much about 4-wheelers but I ride sleds a lot and have come to realize that a well-tuned clutch can be a world of difference. Normally it's one of the first recommended mods. Don't know if it is the same for 4-wheelers, but I didn't want to just reply to your question with a question, so I thought I'd throw it in. I also added a link to your site to my webpage like you requested. Thanks and take it easy.

-Josh

Didn't the Stage 1 come with new springs and weights? If so, I would go for either/and a Roller clutch to get rid of throttle lag and help acceleration and backshifting, trail porting, bigger carb plus the reeds. Those sound like the majors to me. There is also the Billet cool head with 12:1 compression to run on pump gas...

Piranha,
I went with the mid-range pipe. That's the one Rick Ritter suggested for my type of riding. The difference is VERY noticable over stock. And I've noticed absolutely no negative impact. My Scrambler performs great! In fact, the increased performance has now made me want even more! The top end pipe is very appealing, but it just wouldn't have been then logical choice for me. We don't have open dunes here in Alaska and I rarely drag. Thanks for adding my link and as soon as I get around to up-dating my site, I'll return the favor.

Definetly go with a complete clutch kit next, Springs wieghts and helix which is matched to the power band of Ricks pipe. Tuning your clutch to your pipe and riding style is very important, With Ricks reccomendations on your clutch you should notice a lot stronger response, As far as reeds go I went with the V-Force cage and noticed a lot crisper throttle response but am still undecided if the price tag warranted the $150??

I just put in a new Wiseco and had the head shaved and the cylinder ported. I just rode it for the 1st time yesterday after putting it back together. All I can say is...wow. I can't believe the power this 400 puts out.

Crawdad, I was just wondering if you noticed a noise level increase from your motor after the porting? I ask this because I just put mine back together after a trail port and the engine/cylinder seems way noisier...maybe it's just the power but was curious to know. (Yes, I did reassemble everything correctly)

Xplor, actually mine seems quieter in the engine/cylinder area with the new piston & porting. I think that's because I had alot of piston slap before the piston went out. Did you put in a new Wiseco? I had my cylinder bored .020 over too. I don't notice the exhaust being any louder either but mine was on the loud side anyway before the port job. I do know it gave me a substantial increase in power.

Crawdad, I had the Weisco put in after one month just to be sure. It seemed fine so I kept the same one after the trail porting. I may try and put back on the stock silencer to really hear the engine purr more. This FMF sounds awsome but drowns out the motor...

AKScrambler,

I am in the same boat that you are in. I love my RCR Stage 1 Kit! Much better power and I am now getting used to the added noise.

Since power is addictive, I want a little more. But I don't want to turn my engine into a time bomb.

I might replace my $30 Boyesen Power Reeds and go with Boyesen Pro Reeds (carbon fiber) or their Rad Valve or the Delta V-Force valve.

So keep us posted on the mods you do next to give me some ideas.

'96 Scrambler w/RCR Stage 1 Kit, K&N filter, and Boyesen Power Reeds.
