Reliable machines for the most part with a good track record. A lot of what gives them a bad rap is owner neglect/abuse,then they sell them. The next owner can have his hands full repairing all the problems. This can turn them off a particular brand no matter which one it is.Saw this happen a lot over the years. Some people would come into the shop and say I'll never buy brand x or brand y again..Used atvs can be a bigger nightmare than used cars at times.

Yea that is how it seems i have a pretty good list to go through tomorrow morning and if i can not get it going by lunch i am going to stop by yamaha and let my guy there check it out but they said it was running 3 weeks ago. When the pit **** broke they jb welded it and had the switch rigged up so i think it is just something simple.

So we at it all day and it was the pick up or trigger coil. Hit it with some sand paper and bent it a little and bingo. However, it will fire up and die but as soon as i give it gas it dies. Does not sputter or back fire just chokes out. Now the lines on the fuel pump are dry when i unhook them from the carburetor. I looked through the carb and looked ok but i could go through it again. Any ideas?

Figured it was the pickup coil as most that report just one spark ends up either dirt on it or the pickup is out of alignment. Pull the fuel line from the carb and crank the engine over. Should be either a stream or a pulse of fuel.If you have good fuel flow,I'd just rebuild the carb,no sense in taking it off without rebuilding it.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polaris-Scrambler-500-2x4-2001-2002-Carburetor-Carb-Rebuild-Kit-Repair-/201228380567?hash=item2eda256997&vxp=mtr if fuel flow is weak, could be the inline filter stopped up or the fuel pump needs to be replaced.

bypassed from tank straight to carb and it runs fine. is it ok to leave it this way as long as there is a fuel filter on there? and it idles really high. best way to adjust idle?

If it's idling high just turn the idle adjuster screw down. If that doesn't help you may have the throttle cable too tight or carb may need cleaning/rebuilt.The reason for the fuel pump is that the carb isn't low enough for gravity alone to supply all the fuel from the tank. It can run good for a while, but at a certain level the carb can run dry,but you can still have fuel left in the tank. Plus it's a constant velocity carb, meaning it's designed to draw a vacuum on the fuel pump to supply fuel to it.
