98 Sportsman no spark....can't locate wire colors noted in the repair manual
#1
Hi..long time lurker, first time poster. Okay, not first time positing I just did the newbie introduction thing....
I have a 98 Sportsman 500 4x4 with no spark.
In process of going through the flowchart in the manual for testing the ignition system.
Disconnected the black CDI wire from the panel; still no spark.
Stator: GRN to BLK/R = 0 OHMS (should be around 446)
GRN to R = 1.7 OHMS (should be 3.2)
W to W/R = 108 OHMS (within spec; should be 98ish)
This would tell me the stator needs to be replaced, correct?
The next tests are Y to Y/BRN and Y/R to Y/BRN. I can't locate these wires under the headlight....do I look for these down in the flywheel housing?
Thanks for taking a second to help me out

Never mind about the yellow wires if the Green to Black/Red are shorted out. This is the main exciter coil and by your readings needs to be replaced and comes complete with the yellow regulator wires. Found a lot of stators that the pick up coil ohmed out good, but the exciter kept it from running.Cheap aftermarket stators are showing up every where now. Don't know how good they are,but worth a shot at this price.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stator-Coil-...ASportsman+500 Plus here's on that shows the pick up coil also. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stator-FITS-POLARIS-SPORTSMAN-500-1998-2000-NEW-Magneto-/270764309482?fits=Make%3APolaris

Thanks Old Polaris Tech! I've ordered the part you linked to from Ebay and should have it by the weekend. I'll let you know if it turn out to be junk, but you're right at that price you can't go too wrong.
I appreciate the assist!

New (ebay) stator in and she fired right up! Thanks for the assist OPT.
One word of advice for anyone replacing a stator. Removing the flywheel is a $itch! Puller, heat and hammer it takes some time but it will come off.

Glad to see that the cheap 30 buck ebay stator work.Better than paying $475 for an oem or even $225 from Ricks.Hope it holds up for you. Yes flywheels can be stubborn on some, pop right off on other 500s.
