Thanks for your help Polaris Tech, I'll give that a try.

 

Don't ignore the water pump...that was what bedeviled me the whole time. Since I drive through a lot of water and mud, I never really noticed the seal on the water pump losing all my coolant. And when you have no coolant, the engine tends to run pretty warm....
