Hopefully no big deal on getting this machine up and running. On a side note if you ever come across an Explorer 250 that was only made a couple years(2000-2002) and in good shape, grab it. I was really impressed by these little 250 machines that had a prop shaft from the gear case to the the front diff, then to the drive shafts and had a convention chain rear drive. Sold every one we could get our hands on to farmers, ranches and hunters that loved them. This should complete your herd of two strokes..

Thanks OPT,

I have always heard of the Xplorer 250 but haven't seen any around here because of their rarity. Nice little motors that seem to be pretty tough. I had the Xplorer 300 that I did last winter and really liked it but would have liked to find something with a shaft drive like a magnum. I went and looked at a 1996 425 magnum this morning that had a plow set up. Guy was a little too high on price and wouldn't budge. It had been rolled once so the speedometer was gone and the handle bars were tweaked along with the racks. The front left hub was apart from going bad and it was pretty trashed from bad bearings and seal allowing water to get in and rust everything up. I didn't have a good feeling about it and his $800 price tag didn't help matters.

I got to work on the 250 today and I narrowed it down to a carb issue. I first checked the compression and I had a little over 125 with a dry cylinder so I am not bad there. Disconnected the reverse limiter and it still won't start. Has good spark but no go or even a pop when cranking. I decided to take the carb apart and it was bone dry. The carb looks freshly rebuilt but must not be getting fuel. I am getting it through the line but not through the carb. I squirted a shot of fuel into the carb and it fired right up and ran for a few seconds. Guess I will pull the carb again and throw a kit in it and set the floats. Is there any adjustment on the pull style newer chokes like on the old flip ones? That's the only thing I haven't messed with but the carb is very similar to the 300's, 350's and 400's I've worked on.

Thanks,
Mike

Sounds like you may have some trash under the seat or float needle blocking fuel entry.Any excess slack you feel at the **** can be taken up at the carb adjuster, same as on all the 2 strokes. What a lot of people didn't realized that if the choke **** is loose, wont stay out when you pull it,just pull the rubber cover and tighten the inner plastic nut that sits over the main holder nut. This puts pressure on the choke shaft so it will stay out where you pull it. Then side the cover back over the large nut.

Thanks OPT,

If there was ever a case of the importance you stress on downloading the cheap service manuals, this would be the case. After I pulled the carb apart and put it back together yesterday, I just had a weird feeling something just wasn't right when I had it apart. Sure enough, the guy who rebuilt it last time had the floats in upside down which would not allow the float arms to drop and get fuel through the valve. Guy could have looked at the manual and seen how everything went back together and had a good running machine. Now my daughter's have a nice little machine to zip around with and it cost me a whopping 400 bucks basically what the guy spent on the new rims and tires he put on right before he couldn't get it to run.

Thanks,
Mike

Glad you could see the humor in this, lol.

I guess we all can't be rocket scientists or brain surgeons, lol

Thanks for all the pointers OPT,

Mike

At least the carb is clean... Yes a lot of people could look at this pic and not find anything wrong. Plus if the carb bowl had those little vinyl caps that went over the float studs he possibly wouldn't have turned them upside down and then you wouldn't have gotten this machine at a bargain basement price. Kinda reminds me of the old saying about if the horse hadn't lost the nail, the shoe wouldn't have thrown,etc... Plus there's at least 5 or six videos on this carb on youtube he could have looked at..
