Default 2011 500 sportsman camshaft

The cap on the left side of the cam cover cracked and spewing oil. I removed the cap and found pieces busted and pins sheared.
I noticed the cam has way lots of side to side play like a thrust bearing was broken or missing also. Before I tear it down I want to make sure how the timing sprockets are set for alignment and what the purpose the parts inside the cap have. Ideas? Thanks.

Cam compression release lever and spring along with the stop pin on the left side. Cam rides in a milled cavity in the head.Cam shouldn't have any play. Possible that the head is damaged, but best to tear it down and inspect. Highly suggest a cheap manual to acquaint yourself with this engine. Shows how to time the cam back up,etc.2011 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO Service Manual PDF Download
