Welcome to the forums.

Are you using the premix reservoir or have you bypassed that and mixing the oil yourself?

Also, it is at least 12 years old, so needing new rings isn't out of the realm of possibilities.

Nice thing about 2 strokes, they are easy to work on.

not having a battery could leed to issues with the charging system and maybe stator failing as your charging something that is not there. no issues with the oil pump not having a battery. it might be that the pump is set to high and giving you too much oil flow as well. it also depends on type of 2 stroke oil you use. it wouldn't hurt to do a compression test to see where your at. not sure of the fan temp but I suggest you buy a battery as it could save you in the long run.

I agree with all of that. Running it without a battery can blow out all the light bulbs and possibly damage other components. I've been behind 2-strokes that didn't smoke much until the rider jabbed the throttle. In my limited experience, full-synthetic injection oil smokes less.

Rings will have nothing to do with the amount of smoke since it's a 2-stroke (rings on a 2-stroke are compression only...not compression & oil like a thumper)...your oil pump may need adjusting or perhaps you changed oil brand recently (the good oils burn far cleaner and still lubricate). Plugs have temp ranges as well...which may contribute...2-strokes generally smoke more when cold and clean up when warm (leaner running condition)...

I've NEVER had a problem running with a dead battery...and I've owned a lot for a long time...not sure where these comments are coming from as the battery is in no way shape or form a regulator...

My $0.02...
