Have you checked the voltage at the battery? I know this is also a dumb question, but did you charge the battery first? I picked up a new battery for mine a few days ago and had to charge it for I think 8 hours or so before I could use it. Assuming the battery is charged, I would see if you are getting voltage to the headlights and electric start, if not then might be worth tracing the wires to make sure there are no breaks anywhere.
