My dad bought a brand new '01 Xplorer 400. About half way through his first ride, the throttle pushes real hard and sticks. It has less than 50 miles on it. Any idea what it could be?
Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem with my 2000 xplorer the first day i bought it. I jumped on it and ran down the street, the throttle stuck wide open and had to hit the kill switch. I fixed it by pulling the throttle cable up to where it is level with the box the cable goes in to. Then take a black zip tie and put it around the cable and the handlebars. That fixed my problem. There was a recall on them. The dealer will replace the throttle assembly. I had mine replaced since it was free and never have had a problem since then.

My Xplorer did the same thing, and when I finally figured out what happened, I felt silly. It seems the grip on the right side of the handlebar slid about an inch or so out, like it was trying to fall off, but didn't make it. It seems there is a flare or shoulder on the inside edge of the grip that is big enough, it can interfere with the thumb throttle. The thumb lever is bent in such a way, if the grip is all the way in, there is clearance, but if the grip slips out a little, the lever catches it. It shouldn't be your throttle housing as it was SUPPOSED to be fixed in the 01 models, unless yours is an early model or something.
Let us know what you find out.

Also, if it still sticks, check to be sure it isn't kinked by the oil pump (or that the oil pump isn't full of gunk), and also where the two cables join into one under the left panel under the gas tank.

Dealer is picking it up tonight. It also has a clunk in the front end. I'll let everyone know what happens. Thanks for the replies.
