After cleaning my Xplorer 400 this evening, I unscrewed the plug on the spark arrester (owners manual suggests doing it every now and then), and lots of crap came out of it. Well, I figured I'd ride around a bit and shake the last of it out...

I now have a problem. It made enough of a power difference so that I don't want to put the plug back in, plus I like the sound of it. Is it safe to run this without the plug in it? (I only took out the rearward plug, I can't figure out how to take the front one out, or if you even can take it out.)

So, is this going to cause any damage to any parts, the spark arrester, the engine, header pipe... anything? Or is it perfectly safe if I run it without this plug installed?

Thanks

Come on... SOMEBODY must know if it's safe to run without that plug in...

I don't know if it's safe, but I have been running mine like that for a couple of years and it hasn't done anything. So, I guess it's just up to you on this one.

Okay, that's good. I'm enjoying this extra power a bit too much to go back now...
Thanks for the reply.

I'm surprised nobody else has asked that question. I think that if you go into the forest to ride then you should probably put it back in, but I'm really not sure. We can just sit here and let everyone else wonder how they can get more performance out of their quads. And it didn't cost a penny!

I removed mine and installed a piece of threaded pipe with an elbow on it pointing to the rear. The angled pipe keeps mud out which sometimes clogs up the opening.

Actually, its not all that much louder than it was before... just more open sounding (kind of like a riced up car with a huge muffler tip, it has a bit more "brap" to it, which I like on a 2-stroke, not so much on a 4-stroke). But I can feel the power difference, and I'm pretty sure I like it...

If you REALLY want to wake up the Xplorer, get ahold of Rick Riter at 618-644-3211 and ask him to build you a pipe like he did for me.My Xplorer is so damn fast now it causes ''shivers'' to others just buy watching me cruise by!Its like being the baddest dude in your town,
