Recently bought a Trailboss 4x4. Don't know what year it is and can't get it to start. We have good spark, fuel delivery, and compression, but not even a little pop. Could there be a timing problem and how can I determine the year? Don't know much about atv ignitions. Thanks.

You dont know the year of your own quad?I hope this thing is not HOT.I will look in my Polaris service manual and try and find out how to determine the year for you,as long as the quad is not stolen that is.Im thinking you can find the yr by the serial #.I'll check and get back with you.BILL

Any Polaris dealer should be able to find what year your qhad is simply by giving them the serial number. I would call 2-3 different dealers just to see if they are the same. My buddy just did this with a Blaster that was given to him. Took all of thirty seconds.

Bill, I know the quad isn't stolen, got it from a friend that knew the original owner.

The model # should be on a sticker on the frame. The location depends on the year but it should start with a W then 2 numbers which are the year. Beginning in 97 or 98 they switched to a serial # that had the year of manufacture in it. But they also have a sticker on the front headlight pod or the radiator cover that shows the date of manufacture. There may be a sticker on the engine that has the date it was made that will be close to the model year. Charlie

I'd go back and look at the compression again - those 2 cycles only seem to like to run with a compression of 95psi or above. I re-ringed a couple 250 Trailbosses last month for some guys that were have very similar symptoms to what you are describing.

If its is an older quad, or a hard ridden one, you may also be looking at the crank seals being worn out - without a good seal on the crankcase a 2 cycle won't run, and if it does - it don't run good. Seals are inexpensive ($5 each) and not that hard to put in as long as you have the tools to pull the clutch and the flywheel.
