Here's the situation: I want to decrease the time it takes me to go from 0-40 mph and be able to do wheelies. I do mostly trail riding and want smooth power when climbing hills with rocks and ledges. I also want to be able to do light to moderate utility work. I was told by a local dealer that there are really no mods for the Scrambler 500 4x4 that will do this.

He said:

1. If I put in a sport clutch kit I can wheelie and race better but will burn belts when doing utiility work. I also will have a hard time keeping the front end down when going up hills with rock ledges and such.

2. If I jet the carb I will have to adjust it every time the temperature changes 10 degrees.

3. If I add a pipe it will not make enough difference to justify the cost ($260).

4. A K&N filter will only make a minute difference by itself.

He said my best bet is to buy a Banshee or Raptor if I want more speed. Hold on here, don't shoot the messenger, I am only relaying what I was told. I really like my Scrambler 500, I just want to get a little more punch out of my take offs, more top end speed would be nice but it is not my main concern.

Any Suggestions??? What mods have you tried and honestly were they worth it?

Your machine is great at what it does. If you want speed; I suggest a second bike. You can't have it all. The 400 Scrambler 4x4 would answer your needs in my opinion. But then again; we always want more. Don't we?

1. Your primary spring and weights determine the stall speed. If you're going to be doing some utility work, then don't go too radical on the front spring and use heavier weights. Your takeoffs will be better and you won't get the RPMs high enough to hurt the belt. If you're going to be doing any hillclimbing, a roller clutch is a big help.

2. 4-strokes aren't nearly as picky as 2-strokes when it comes to jetting. Don't worry about jetting unless you add a new pipe.

3. You won't get the same HP increase from a 4-stroke when adding a pipe as you will with a 2-stroke. A good pipe will add maybe 2-4 HP.

4. Anything you can do to get more air into the motor is going to help. The filter by itself won't cause a noticeable difference, but it'll help a new pipe to work better.

The 500 is a very good machine for the trails. I've got a SC400 and 500 and unless you're riding in wide-open areas, I'd much rather be on the 500. Regardless of what people tell you, the 500 can be made faster. I've outrun stock Banshees in short races and it was within one quad-length of the SC400 (with pipe, 38mm carb and clutch kit) until we installed a 12:1 cool head and had trail porting done.

Kevin, are the mods you listed (with pipe, 38mm carb and clutch kit) for the 400 or 500? What mods do you have on the 500?

Those are on the 400.

On the 500 I've done:

New primary spring & weights.
Roller clutch & new secondary spring.
Supertrapp IDS2 exhaust.
K&N filter.
Dynojet carb kit.
Lightened flywheel.
Modified airbox.
HPD belt.

I'm getting ready to put a 12:1 Wiseco in and will probably get some trail porting done after that. I'm hoping it will get closer to the 400 after that.

Kevin: What mod(s) do you think made the most difference on your 500? What would you reccomend I start with?

The first thing I'd do is buy a clutch kit, or if you have the money get a roller clutch and new primary spring & weights. I'd also buy a K&N filter. Later when you buy a pipe, you can simply change your springs and weights to tune your clutch to match the new pipe.

It`s difficult but shaving weight makes a big difference in performance for the Scram plus it`ll be through out the power band.
