I have a '01 Xplorer 400. I put in a new plug and drained the carburetor non of which helped. On take-off in Hi, the motor bogs down and barely goes. In low and Reverse it seems fine. Anyone else have this problem? Anyone ha ny ideas where my problem lies?
Thanks for any help.

There could be a chance it is in the clutching if it works fine in low range. The belt might be running to low in the secoundarie clutch an might need a sheeve remove to help this. What it dose is like if it has a five speed trans in it. It is starting in secound gear an not first. That sounds like what might be the problem

Yes, it is exactly like taking off in second gear. Should I get the clutch looked at now?
Thank you for the reply!

Clutch buttons, these 3 $1.50 parts can end a riding day. Sounds like what happened to me in a valley in IN., my day was over. One more thing, off the subject though. If you have VForce Delta Reeds, make sure you warm up your bike before taking off. It might backfire and blow your reeds. You'll know this has happened, it'll idel, but wouldn't take any throttle. Good Luck.

You may have a broken or fatigued primary clutch spring.

My 00 Xplorer has been doing that since new.It was'nt until last wk that I found out what was causing it.

Inspect your PRIMARY sheeves for wear at the very bottom of the clutch sheeves. They should be TAPERED all the way up the ramp, mine were wore smooth and straight at the very bottom of the sheeves and causing the belt not to ride the sheeves correctly until they got over the bottom worn part of the sheeves.

My new clutch is in,and the dealership is installing a new primary for me,hopefully this wk.
Best of luck,
Bill

To clarify what a sheeve is it is a washer that comes in differnt thicknesses to ajust the secoundarie clutch. If the belt is riding low in the secoundarie then either it is there are too many sheeve in it or the buttons are bad. If you don't do any work on it yourself then take it in a tell them what is happening.

Scrambler,
thats not what a sheeve is?The sheeve is the ramped part of the clutch.

Ah that would be a shim not a sheave, A sheave is one face of a clutch ie the part that the belt runs on.
