Need a little help guys.My Xplorer takes a couple of seconds to hook up when i floor it while drag racing with friends.Do you think that my carb isn't set up correct.I have a K&N filter on it,do you think i should change my main jet?And yes my filter is clean.Would V-force reed valves make a big difference.Heard they were only worth it if you had a pipe.

Getting sick of losing off the line by Kodiaks'praries, grizzles and sportmans.Catch up and pass the first two pretty fast and i finish by catching the grizz afterif the road is long enough and with the HO we stay pretty much equal all the way with him getting about 2 quad lenght's off the line.

Thanks

That is normal. It is like a stall converter. When you get ready to drag race you need to bring the RPM's up to where you feel the bike wants to sart moving. You will feel it when it strats to grap the belt.

Stevexplor, try changing your main jet. Go down a size or two. The stock jet is a 210, so try a 200. Don't lean it out too much. Watch the spark plug to see if it is running too lean. I changed the sizes on my carb and went down 3 sizes and it made a huge difference. Instant acceleration and it really makes a difference once you hit about 20mph. Also mess with the fuel mixture screw. Start by turning it all the way in and then go out 3/4 turn and a 1/4 turn after that untill you get it dialed in right. Good luck.

I think x_scrambler may be right. If your idling really low, it will take a relatively long time to spin up and grab the belt. You could try holding the brakes just enough to keep you still, and raising the RPMs right to the engagement point. When the flag drops, let off your brake and stab the throttle (this works for snowmobiles, too).

However, if you say that you're losing to other automatics, perhaps you should check your belt width. Sounds like maybe its worn down enough so that its slipping when it first engages.

Thanks guys.Holding the brake is an old trick around here and all of my friends have caught on to it hehe.I know i'm due for a belt because my bike used to loft the front wheels with a little tug in high range and won't do it anymore, and i have a homemade pushbar and 2000 pds warn winch in the front. But even with the worn belt and holding the brake to built the rpm's i find that there is a lag.Has anyone tried out a Gates belt,i heard that they grab really good but don't last as long.Me and my friends have tried all sorts of belts and found that the Polaris belts are the best for now.Wondering if i should go for a 190 main jet right away, must be some 400 owners that have tried all type of recipes, what's best guys, save me some hassle. Thanks called the mecanic at the local Polaris dealer but he does not seem to know f$$k all.

Steve, the best belt i have found is the goodyear powerstreak belt. I have been running one for the last year. I run my xplorer mostly in mud and i love to wheelie it. It doesn't show much sign of wear. You should change the jet in your carb. That will make a huge difference. They run them rich from the factory. You can't get the most power out of the motor unless you lean it out a little. Don't go too far, just run it for about 5 minutes and watch the plug. Good luck.

If you don't have the EBS you could get a Roller clutch for instant throttle response. HPD and Aaen offer them. A bit costly but well worth the expense.
