My Sport 400L dies in reverse unless I hold the reverse override button. It only does this when it's pretty cold outside. Two years ago it did this for a while, but I started keeping it in the barn where it was warm and dry and had no problems until today when I left it outside all day. It didn't get rained or snowed on, just cold. However I did wash it over the weekend when it was 55 degrees and it never totally dried. I haven't tried anything yet, just holding the override to get through this episode. Anyone else have this problem? I might put some heat in the garage for a day and try to see if it goes away.

Yes, I have this problem with my 94 Polaris 400 4x4. Dies in reverse evrytime, Unless I hold down the override button. I have been meaning to look into it, but never have. Maybe if we bypass the switch all together it will work. hmmmm. I would like to hear what other people have to say about it though.

Mine is a 95, as I don't believe I disclosed that in my original post.

It may be just because it is cold natured I know my cousins 300ex does this and it don't do it after about 45 minutes of riding so it may just be cold blooded. <marquee> for your sake I hope thats what it is!!!!</marquee></color></size> <IMG SRC="http://www.pinn.net/~nunnally/faces/face15.gif">

That happened to me on my 97 Scrambler 500 after slopping around in a NASTY DEEP mudhole for about 30 minutes... The difference was, mine died if I took it out of forward at all.. I could keep it running, but only by holding the override button down... Come to find out, I had covered the electronics board in mud and one ground wire wasn't getting a good connection.. IT WAS CONNECTED, just corroded up...
I just drove it off into a duck pond, took the hood off, and used it to scoop water up onto the board... after geting all the mud off, I moved the wire to another prong...
Problem solved!!...
But, the long term fix is to simply bypass the override button altogether...
Just remember to tell wives/girlfriends to be careful when backing up... So they don't hurt themselves.

Pull the black wire from the rev limiter off of the circuit board. See if it will run when put in reverse, if it does it's the rev limiter that needs to be replaced.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Exactly where is the electronics board and is it easy to get to? I don't think I'll do anything too drastic as it is still an intermitent problem, but the next time it acts up I'm going to try a few of these things so I'll know more about it in case it becomes terminal.

Ultra,
On my Scrambler its located under the "hood" just forward of the steering shaft. On mine, the ground wires are all located low/left on the board.. but yours may be different...
If you are good friends with a dealer, maybe he can copy the wiring diagram off for you.... If not, just pull the wires off, one at a time, clean the connector and prong, then reinstall it...
Good Luck...
