What does the L in 400L mean?
It means it is liquid cooled. Polaris introduced its first liquid cooled 2 stroke engine way back in 1990.
Before that, all they had was air cooled, and no 4 strokes. 4 strokes did not show up until 1995 with the 425 Magnum.
The air cooled engines had to be run fast enough to keep them cool or you had to install a cooing fan kit if you wanted to putts around. So the "L" engines were a great improvement.
