Sportsman performance??
#21
Okay firemedic, what is an EPI clutch kit? I am working with AAEN as they have a pretty affordable pipe and clutch kit right now, but as of yet I haven't bought one. If I keep tabs on this forum long enough, I'm sure I will find the solution to the performance on the 500 Sportsman. So keep submitting all that engineering and mechanical stuff you quadmasters, and I'll thank you in advance!

HEY SWAC. AN EPI PERFORMANCE CLUCH KIT IS SIMPLY A KIT THAT REPLACES THE STOCK HELIX, WEIGHTS AND SPRINGS. IT IS FROM ERLANDSON PERFORMANCE INC. OUT OF BRAINERD, MN. THEIR PHONE # IS (218) 829-6036. COST WAS 160.00
IT TOOK A COUPLE HOURS TO INSTALL. FAIRLY EASY ALSO.
IT PROVIDES MODERATE MID-RANGE CHANGES, AND SEEMS TO PROVIDE BETTER LOW RANGE TORQUE.

Be careful about Scram 500 cams, springs, etc. Polaris had to change lots of things on this motor to get it to hold together, cam, valves, springs, head, crank, bearings, etc. And there are probably other parts. When trying to soup up the 500 they couldn't keep the bottom end together and kept tearing up the crank. I don't think I want to rev mine much more that the present 7,100-7,200 it already turns on the tach without doing something to the crank.
I'm in the middle of trying the 40mm carb route right now, we'll see what that does for the mid-top end. I'm very happy with the roller clutch and low-mid performance right now, but from mid-top end, it stinks.
A clutch kit will help low-mid range, but still does nothing to compensate for the lack of hp on the top side.
The dyno report goes downhill like a ski slope after 25 mph, that ain't good. Go to DynoJet's site and check out the SP500 and then look at the Grizz. It's pretty obvbious which will perform better mid-top. The Grizz has a good 8-10 more hp pulling it at 30 mph than the SP500.
If you have ever raced a Grizz, that's about how the stock machines run, the SP500 out first and then the Grizz rules mid-top.

Hey Jack, I think I'm going to start out slow and kinda easy. I am looking at the pipe and clutch upgrade from AAEN as this seems like a simple way to go. Looking forward to seeing your results on the 40mm carb upgrade. Whats the news on the roller clutch, as I hear a lot about plastic buttons and don't know what their talking about.

Boy. Needles to say, I'm pretty impressed with the amount of info. To SWAC: my cousins sp500 is stock, as is mine. He uses his for getting around the ranch where I use mine to spray, ie. he is running in high gear most of the time and I am in low. We did not race to top end...it was after a day of pheasant hunting and didn't feel safe with the amount of beers in us to do so. I want to get from zero to 35-40 in a hurry. So I want alot of low end torque - right? And so far, it sounds like I might want to change the clutch?

Yeah foster, that is exactly where I began this thread, performance in the middle. Clutching does appear to be the focus right now. Who has put on the ultimate clutch set-up? I don't mean ultimate price, but ultimate performance in realistic monetary category. Sure be nice if us SP500 owners could put our heads together and maybe start our own division of Polaris field research, paying that is...

I wonder how the Sportsman 500 compares in a "drag race" against its Magnum 500 counterpart... Somebody that has one of each of these..(both with EBS and the stock tire sizes) needs to line these up.. It would be interesting how close they are... Whats the weight difference 30-50 lbs? I'm just wondering if the IRS plays any part in it, other than weight...

Well, Both have Engine Braking System (or Exhaust brake.. whatever)EBS.. ya'll get the idea...
Both have the same powerplant...(4-valve 500 cc 4-stroke.) Same carburetor, same low/hi transmission... Really, the only difference is the Independent Rear Suspension. (which is probably where the extra weight comes from)
OK Kevin.. we know you have access to both in stock form....
Line-em up and lets see if the weight/final drive helps or hurts... Or no difference at all.
Maybe armed with the results, we can all learn more as to why there are variations on top speed and may find other ways to help with mid-range and top end performance.
