I have narrowed my choice to AAEN, and want to spend $500 - $700 for some more snot.

Let's see:
high end pipe,
K&N filter
medium aggressive clutch kit
roller 2ndary clutch kit
steering damper.

I am looking for suggestions before I order this stuff next week...

Uh....2 stroke or 4 stroke ?

I have the full Aaen package as reviewed by ATV sport in a past issue.

Megaphone Exhaust pipe
42mm TMX carb
Roller action clutch kit ( Aggressive )

Plus a Dayco high performance belt from HPD

I also have an Adjustable steering dampener from Aaen ( Great )

You should be able to get every thing for $700 or so.

You might want to hold off on the high end pipe unless you plan to rejet the carb or replace it with the 42mm. I don't know if Aaen sells any other pipes or if you want to buy a milder pipe.

Sorry Chris,

Mine is the 00 500 (Gonna let my brother worry about his '99.

SHOOT! What mag and issue? I've been reluctant to go to a 42 carb, but maybe that's just the turkey in me.

If you can help me find the article you are talking about, I would again appreciate you from afar. (Not too Far, I'm in Randolph, NJ)

Hey Chris, so you have put a few mods on from AAEN, now we need the Chris review as to what improvements you have seen/felt. I just ordered a clutch kit and pipe from AAEN for my SP500 and was wondering what others had done as well. AAEN was my final choice as well after looking at other performance upgrades, I'll know when I get it and slap it on.

o2b4unc, I can't seem to find the mag that the article was in but it was almost a year ago. There is still hope of finding it but if i do i will send it to you. I believe it was ATV Sport but i'm not sure. The article was on modifying the scrambler 500. Olav Aaen installed the same parts that i listed in my post on a 98 Scrambler 500 and compared it to a stock 99. The modified 98 500 beat the stock 99 by 4 or 5 bike lengths in a 100 foot drag.

Sounded good to me so i ordered the kit. I installed the compents one at a time so i can se the difference. The roller clutch is by far the best thing you can do to these machines. Olav recommeded a rear clutch setting but tunning the cluch becomes more a personal thing. Weight and power affect the operation of the clutch.

As far as the 42mm carb i would never go back but installing that turkey as you stated turned out to be a pain in the ***. Just getting to the carb is a chore. The throttle cable was too short and i had to remove some plastic out of the throttle housing.

Reguardless of all the hassle the carb is awsome. The throttle response is instant and the motor is strong throughout the power band.

I have had the Aaen kit installed now for almost a year and i have no complaints.

Reducing some weight helps too. I have shed maybe 30 lbs or so and you can realy notice a difference. When it gets warmer i am going to replace the swing arm with a lighter ( 7 lbs ) and longer ( 3 inches ) swing arm from Hot seat.

If there was anything i missed let me know.

For what it's worth, I weigh in at 275+ at 6'4"

The Scrambler's weight is minimally my concern.

Chris, we are riding Sunday 1 pm in the Poconos. You're just 1.5 hours away at the most. Invite is open.

I think your looking for the DW 4/99 issue? It has an review on an AAEN modded 400 and 500 (both '98). The 500 had the 42mm TMX, Aaen muffler, roller clutch kit, and a K&N..

Chris how much did your aeen kit cost? I can't decide whether to get a kit from aeen, hpd, rcr or hotseat, anyone have any info about a direct comparison between these companies?

Hi Jerry and Ryan,

THANKS for pointing at these articles.

TB, I also read that article, but they started with a non-high-output 500...so I liked what they said but wasn't sold on matching their decisions.

I am sold on AAEN, and their history, including snowmobile clutch experience.

Jerry, and suggestions on how I can read DW 4-99 article?

Rich
