Which clutch kit is best?
#1
I'm thinking about getting a clutch kit for my 2001 Sportsman 500HO. The September isssue of Dirt Wheels had an article about "Best Bang For Your Buck" they had a section for Sportsmans. The clutch kits mentioned in the article are the EPI kit that High Lifter sells and Hot Seat's Hypershift clutch kit.
Any experience, recomendations, opinions or other suggestions on what I should get.
Thanks

I have had a Erlandson Clutch kit[EPI] on my 99 500cc Sportsman,it cost 159 dollars and was not worth 30 bucks in my opionion.
On my 00 Xplorer,I had a Hot Seat clutch kit[159 dollars] and it seemed to be a much better clutch kit than the Erlandson.
I now am running a Heel Clickers Clutch kit in the Xplorer and it out performs both the Erlandson on Hot Seat clutch kits.If you need more info on the Heel Clickers, type in SUPERTORQUER.COM and call Randy to discuss your options.Dont buy into the hype that his kit gives 40% more low end.It will increase the low end performance as well as the top end,but not as much as they tell you,at least not on mine anyways.

I have tried HPD,Erlandson,Hot Seat on my H.O And Hot Seat was the clear winner. HPD was in the early stages of release and gladly returned my money. As for Erlandson they said it worked on their test machine,so now it sits on the shelf.I have talked to HPD since and they claim to have fixed the problem. They are agreat company and if you want to give them a chance it might be worth it.Hot Seat's kit worked right out of the box, engagement went up 250 RPM,not bad at all.IT accelerated harder,And backshifted awsome for trail ridding.By far the best kit I have tried and they are about the same price as the rest. How ever the Hot Seat kit doesn't like big tires.I run 26" mudrunners and go to ATV pulls all summer in this set up I bought Erlandsons stiffer secondary spring and it helped slow down the up shift to keep rpm higher. It is kind of the same thing as Erlandsons bigfoot clutch kit as far as I can tell. But the differance is it works.

Hello,
Installed a HPD Aggressive Clutch kit on my SP 500 2000, also a K&N performance kit. There is a impressive increase in power throughout the entire speed range. Have to be careful in low gear, it now has the power to flip the machine over. Will lift the front wheels off the ground in high gear also (about 2 ft.). Top end speed is 64mph.
Also, try adjusting the slack in the throtle cable. Clutch kit installed in about 1.5 hours, K&N kit in about 2 Hours.
Any Questions please let me know.
Total cost Clutch $164, K&N kit $80.
My friend had the same machine as I do, He traded it in for a new HO. He spent an Additional $2200 for the upgrade. He has me at the top end range, but He cannot compete in any of the other speed ranges.

Whatever you do, stay away from Hotseat Performance. They Really suck. Their products aren't too bad, but their customer service is pathetic. I have had nothing but problems with Hotseat since day one. Go with HPD. HPD had good customer service and excellent mods. I wouldn't even think about going through Hotseat again after all the money I spent because of their stupidity and arrogance. They are crap, to put it nicely. Just my opinion.

I am screwed twice by the sounds. I purchaced an epi kit this spring only to find out that my cam was wore. so i never realy got to use the kit. now i've modified the bike and the kit doesnt work right and by the sounds it wouldn't have even if had left it stock.
in the mean time ive been screwing around on my own with heal clickers (left overs from last years snowmobile)
can any one tell me what color and or pound raiting the spring for a sportsman96 would be
what is the helix and the pretension
can any tell me what combonation would help me salvage the epij kit on my over powered sp?

tjschmi1,
Which HPD kit did you use? They list 2 Aggressive kits on their website the CK5EBS is the regular aggressive kit(higher engagement than stocl) and the CK5EBSH which they say has a "very" high engagement they call it a race type?
Thanks,
Warren
