the sportsman is a great "trail rider" just like the 500 it should keep up with you raptor if the trails have alot of turns and not many open areas but in an open area you will run away from him with the woops i dont know i dont think they 400 would do to good i would recomend the scrambler 500 or 400 for your dad it is the best of both worlds fast and 4x4/ well that is what i think

If you aren't riding to 100% of your ability then sure. Obviously when you are riding with people, you take it a little easier. If it's an open trail without many obstacles then your Raptor has the potential to kill him. However, at normal trails speeds he should have no problem.

Depends on the trail I rode with A DS and a Raptor they could not keep uo with me in two wheel drive. but the trails were very rough, and for them it required constants shifting and braking and bottoming out. They were amazed that a big ole 4x4 could fly through the rough stuff like that. Ground clearance and the IRS were the reasons why. only on the fairly flat straights could they really take me big time. All day I never put mine in 4x4 mode.

i have been riding several times with 3 different raptors, they were all pretty close on the skill level. Of course on trail with any mud i would lose them, on acouple of the trails that are like fire roads, just hard packed with hills and corners, i was still infront 95% of the time. The only time any of them pasted me was on one of a couple long strait sections, and they did not go that much faster.
I know, there is a lot of difference between mine(IDS2 pipe, K&N power kit,27" tires, winch, lift, snorkel) and the SP 400, but IF you are on a trail, the raptor guys still have to shift all the time, and avoid large stumps, rocks, and logs.
Just a thought

regular trail riding- of course, anything will just about keep up with anything riding around trails.
Racing of trail riding with the sole intention of leaving the other guy behind?-- Not a chance in blue hell.
For the most part, in normal trail riding, anything will keep up with anything, unless you take a 2wd through something only a 4wd can make it through. At that point, most of the time, the people you are riding with are going to wait for you or help you.
If you are going to race of course, forget it. Nothing less that another sport quad will be able to stay around old Blue Nasty.

Andy hit the sweet spot. Our Recon will keep up with our Raptor in the woods and on most trails. Our 300 4 trax will go places I don't want to be with the Raptor or the Recon. Now when we come off the trails and on to the stripper pit roads or the rock roads we have here in our area the Raptor is long gone. Its just that the fun factor is about 430 cc higher on the Raptor over the Recon.
