I have a 99 Scrambler 500 4x4 that is totally stock. I think it is time to do some mods to it. I need to start with the belt first, I smoked it yesterday. Is there better belts than the stock ones? I also want to change the clutch and add a pipe. Need to upgrade tires and wheels also. As far as tires go, I love to play in the mud so recommend tires for that. Also what is the maximum size tire I can go with front and rear. I appreciate your input but please no "trade it for something else" type remarks!

Thank You
Scott

Scott,

Well, I couldn't say trade it for something else. Frankly, there isn't much else to trade it in on if you like sporty performance and mud.

Get a Dayco Max belt for it. These are the gold standard of belts in the Polaris comunity.

You would be best to stay with one aftermarket manufacturer with the pipe and clutch. In other words, get a HPD pipe and clutch kit, or a HSP pipe and clutch kit, or an Aaen pipe and clutch kit. Are you starting to see a pattern here? Make sure that both come from the same manufacturer.

I hear that the Dirt Devil tires have a pretty good reputation in the mud. As for size, go as big as you can get while maintaining the 1" difference front to rear and make sure the tires don't rub on the machine. I have serious doubts as to getting the "monster" tire kits for a machine like a Scrambler 500, as it doesn't have a low range to pull the larger tires in the mud. Because of this, you will more than likely smoke the belt again in the first good mud hole you go through.

Also when you go to a larger tire, you in effect change the gearing on the machine, sort of like dropping the rear sprocket a size or two. You'll gain speed, but lose power. You don't want this if you are riding in mud with a single range tranny. Hence the need for a low range tranny.

Thanks for the reply Hyper. Who sells the Dayco Max belt? What is the website for HSP and Aaen?

Thanks
Scott

Just about any Polaris dealer worth his salt should have the Dayco max belt, if not Aaen has them. Give them a call at (262) 552-8981. Olav has seen fit not to enter the 21st century like the rest of us so he doesn't have a web site.

Hot Seat Performance's web site is:www.hotseatperformance.com

HPD's web site is:www.hpd-inc.com

Hope this helps!

HSP's site is. www.hotseatperformance.com

I have their power kit on my SP500HO. Sounds/works great!

BTW
Others will say that It's tough to get a real gain out of the 500. This is somewhat true so don't expect huge gains. But I can now pull the front tires off the ground on pavement in high so it helps some. Good luck

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not looking for alot of performance gains just a little to compensate for some taller tires.

Thanks Again
Scott
