Scrambler 500 4x4 vs. 400EX !!!! Help
#2
Actually top speeds are close but it is how fast they get there when draging
the 400ex will get its top speed quicker. a clutchkit will help pipe and header K&n filter airbox mod or increase the flow some how I can hang with a 400ex all day it is only mxing I can't they are just to nimble. The 400ex is a nice bike but would not trade for one just not my thing.
Race him up a muddy hill that way you will not have to change nothin......lol

mean 250x,
Really about the best you can do is to remove the gas cap, roll the machine out from under it and roll a Raptor in underneath the gas cap.
Seriously there isn't much you can do the the Polaris 500 motor. You could remove the 4x4 system and free up about 50 lbs. Replace steel components with aluminum (i.e. handle bars, bumper), but you still won't get much more out of the motor with out some major bucks.

Sorry man, but there is absolutely nothing that you can do to a Scrambler 500 4x4 to make it beat a 400ex no matter what you do. Those two models are not even compariable. The Scrambler is an under-powered, over priced, over weighted, 4x4 dog. There is no way that a 4x4 machine can be classified as a REAL HIGH-PERFORMANCE SPORT QUAD. Not only that, but even if a Scambler 500 4x4 is capable of beating a 400ex (which there is no way) it will still never beable to manuver as good and have as good of suspension as the 400ex. You are trying to compare something that is not even in the same class at all to the only quad that was awarded ATV Of The Century the first year that it can out. Honda took the best frame that they ever made (the legendary 250r) and mounted the best four-stroke motor that they currently make (XR400 motor). Trust me man, I own a 400ex that has an fmf powercore 4 pipe and a k and n filter with a dyno jet kit and I smoked my friends 2000 Polaris Scrambler 400 2-stroke. I beat him unmercifully too. Not to mention, at the time, my 400ex was completely stock. Sorry man, you bought a lemon that will never out perform the ATV OF THE CENTURY.

Fourtracker14,
Thats not the kind of post he was looking for. Sure the Scrammy isn't in the same class as the 400ex, but come on!!! What are you telling mean250x to do???Trash his Scrammy??? Get a 400ex. NO THANKS!!! Thats the last thing I would do. I would never make it where I go on a crappy 400ex. I don't mean crappy in terms of it being a POS that breaks down yada yada, but just NOT able to go where I go. People drag race every kind of ATV, it's fun. What's wrong with him wondering if he can beat a 400ex in a drag?

What is it with all this talk about drag racing and top speed ???? I ride with a Scrambler 500 4x4, a Lakota 300, Sport 400, a Grizzley, a Magnum 425 and a Wolverine 350 4x4, and we ride mostly rocky trails with some steep hills and mud, while the 400EX is a great machine (my neighbor has one), it would have some trouble riding with us, but who cares????? While riding this past Sunday there was a Raptor in the parking area and he only rode on the gravel fire roads, but again, who cares, he would kill us on the road but in the woods it would be a different story, just my $.02

Ahh, I understand how you ladies are thinking. You are all in denial. Don't worry, maybe someday you will realize the truth rather than the unevenable. By the way, how many years has the Scambler been around? And was it ever achieved the ATV OF THE CENTURY AWARD only after 1 year that it hit the showroom floor? I don't think so. Who cares about 4 wheel drive and reverse the 400ex is a HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORT QUAD. Has the banshee ever had a reverse gear? no. DS650? no. FX400? no. Raptor? yeah, but that's one of the things that makes it stand out in the HIGH PERFORMANCE crowd. Has either of those machines mentioned above ever come equipped with 4 wheel drive. NO!!!! These are all HIGH PERFORMANCE machines. So the fact that the Scambler has both 4 wheel drive and reverse should not even matter at all because it is not a HIGH PERFORMANCE quad. Ok, if you look past the top speed factor, does that mean that all you ladies think that a Scambler 4x4 quad can out-perform and 400ex on a motocross track? That is has better suspension and handling through tight trails up and down hills through the woods? Not only that, but perform better in the mud being in two wheel drive. I am sorry, but any person with the right mind automatically knows that any 4x4 will go through mud better then a 2x4. So that is an issue shouldn't even be thought of. Say you put the Scambler in 2 wheel drive and run it side by side through a mud pit. It would probably perform just the same. So who cares about that issue. There is no way that a 4x4 quad can outperform a HIGH PERFORMANCE QUAD on a motocross track, nimble trails, or anything else. All you ladies are in serious denial. By the way, did I mention if it is possible to wheelie a 500+ pound quad. To me that seems to be impossible. Dirt wheels magazine says that the 400ex has no problem and can wheelie in any gear throughout the powerband. It's called torgue and horsepower.

Ohhhh !!!!! Wheelies ???????? Why didn't you mention that earlier!! Is that how you judge the performance of a quad??? Fourtrack you'd better stick to motocross tracks, but if you do come to the woods of New England make sure you have heavy duty skid plates and a winch. Quads with manual clutches are not meant for slow speed rock crawling, that is for automatics and four wheel drives. I'm sure your quad is very nice, but don't refer to us as "ladies" because we don't agree the 400EX is the best in EVERY situation, maybe some but not EVERY. Who decides ATV of the Century anyway??????
