this engine shares parts with the sport 400, right? i haven't checked the stats, but i think the sport 400 probably has more power. we've all heard of how the scrambler 500's cam, carb and clutch are better than the sportsman 500. my question is this, could i put some of the sport 400 parts on the Xplorer for extra motivation? or even better, some hot seat performance heads and a carb?

Any performance parts that will bolt onto the scrambler engine will fit on the Xplorer engine. Be warned, however, that the frames are slightly different, so exhaust pipes may not. On the bright side, though, there are plenty of choices available for the Xplorer.
Try rittercycle.com they have bolt-on kits for the Xplorer, as does HPD. I am sure there are more, these just popped into my head at the moment.

I once rode an Xplorer that was heavily modded, it was almost scary, for someone only used to a stock one.
Be warned that the engine can be modded beyond what the stock driveline will absorb easily. The chain is usually the first thing needing upgrading. If you don't mod it too much, and only use the power to embarrass your buddies once in a while, you will be fine. IF you try to turn the biggest, nastiest mud tires you can find through the stickiest mud you can find too often, you may wear other parts faster, too.

the explorer is actually one of my relative's quad. He has already upgraded the chain.
