I did a serch regarding cold weather and the five topics did't quite answer my question...

What should be done to my '01 Scrammy 400 2x4 before attempting to ride it in colder weather? First winter with it and I would hate to replace an engine because I did't know!

there's nothing special to do, just let her warm up before you hit the trail.

You might want to replace the K&N with the paper (stock) filter. Polaris machines are jetted pretty rich to begin with when stock. It should work well, mine did when it was new with no mods.

I am sure you would do OK the way you are setup now. Like Mike said you might want to go to the stock paper filter only to cut back on the air you'll be getting to your motor. The cold air leans quads out a little as it is. The K&N might lean it a little to much.

I personaly like the better performance I get in the winter. The cold air sure does neat things to 2 strokes. If it wasn't for the better performance I might not even ride in the winter. I probably like riding in the winter as much as I do the summer.

My bike handles like a dream now but now you have me looking forward to the snow! I guess I will dig up the paper filter. It should be like new anyway!

I just hope the tires are good enough. I was waiting until I get good use out of the stocks to replace them with combo's.

Thanks for the info!

Goofieones,

I see you have a 2x4 like I do. I must say, I could go down any trails by myself. I was always needing a push or a pull. At first winter riding really sucked. Not because of the cold but because I couldn't go anywhere. Then I decided to get a set of tire chains. This was all I needed to make it fun again. My second winter, I added seven more cross links to each chain. These seven were V-Bar type cross links. I went alot better than the year before. My rear tires are basically all chains now. I have mastered the art of putting tire chains on, so I know I can spend the whole winter riding as hard as I do in the summer. This took some time to learn what was a good way and what was not. My trick to keeping them on all winter is lots of bungy cords in the right places.

My point to all this is to make you aware that you will need to get some narly tire chains(even adding more cross links) to make the winter riding as fun as the summer. Remember fluffy snow makes for soft landings that is when you land without your four wheeler. My worst wrecks have all been in the winter and I never walked away with a single scratch. I only ever wrecked because it is just so much fun to slip slide and play. Just watch those little bumps because they may actually be big rocks or stumps.

bmxatv10,

Normally you would be correct, in fact in extreme cold you probably are, but these machines are already jetted rich to start with. I've run mine (when it was stock) into the lower 20s and high teens on stock jetting. No problems there. My only complaint was that since I've switched to Holeshot tires, it just doesn't get the same traction that it had with the round profile stock Goodyears. Of couse, it could be that I've almost doubled the horsepower too.

I actually did put a bigger main jet in for the winter but I also did some other performance stuff at the same time. This was 2 winters ago. I just finished a port job so I'll probably have to go up another size this year. If Goofieones leaves his motor all stock including the filter, he shouldn't have no problems.

I've run mine in -5 below 0 before with no apparent problems. You should be all set.
