I have a scrambler 400 and it does very good on the dunes. I would think the 400 would be better at this type of riding because of the 2 stroke engine although i have never rode a 500 at the dunes i have beaten some with my 400.

I rode all day Sat. at Sliver lake sand dunes in Michigan with my brother. He rides a 400 4x2 all stock. It has no problem going up any of the hills. He seems to fly past those trying to find the right gear on the manual machines. With the automatic's you worry about where to ride next and not what gear to be in.

I wouldn't mind selling my Trail Blazers and buying a 400.

With some mods the Scrambler can be a blast in the sand. Take a look at these 'dunning 400's...

The lighter wt. of the 4X2 is great all around dunes and trail. For serious trail (muddin') when in doubt get the 4X4. Check out the AZ dune guys.....they have some nice videos!!!!

Forgot..once you get a 500 4x4 stuck..get ready to strain...Got mine stuck in some very soft sand in 2wd....Put it in 4, and just buried itself...took 3 of us to get the rear moved...
