I am thinking about selling my Scrambler and was wondering what peoples past experience is when selling a quad when it's modified. I know stock Scramblers in this area are around $4000 for a 2000 4x4. My mods were about $1500, I know it doesn't increase it by $1500, however there must be an average percentage based on peoples past history. Thanks

 

When I look at used ATV's I stay away from ones that have been modified. My experince has been if there's a pipe/silencer/re-jetting mod on the ATV the guy rides it hard and wasn't satisfied with the stock power. I don't buy modded ATV's personally. When I sell them I strip all the mods off and sell it stock.

 

Basically unless you can find a stupid high school kid to buy it, most adult buyers will pass on a modded machine. I know if I am looking to buy used I only buy low milage/time machines that are totally stock. That way I can be reasonably sure that the owner didn't "work" on it and muck things up. Some mods are great like your skid plates, but engine mods are bad news, at least to me.

 

I agree, mods don't help in most circumstances, and in some they actually hurt the value. However, I would consider buying a quad with simple bolt on mods, but never anything that has internal engine mods.

Heck, I can't even get $2400 for my '98 Sport that I am selling!!!!!

I agree also. Mods usually don't add much to the value. Stuff like new tires, winch, racks, etc. don't really add much to the selling price, but it does seem to make it easier to sell. I stay away from buying quads or bikes with any type of motor/perf mods on them.

 

I too stay away from buying anything with mods, they add very little if anything to the value of the machine. Probably not the answers you were looking for.

 

Look at me, I'm trying to sell my full HPD race '99 Sport with tons of extra mods (well over $5500 worth) and will be lucky to get $5000 for the bike. The bike in excellent shape (freshly powdercoated frame and other parts chromed, BRAND NEW top end, ect.), and book is $3500. So Im looking to take over a $4000 hit in the pants here, not to mention all the time and sweat I've put into her!


There are cases where buying a modded quad can be a steal, if the owner kept valuable receipts/documents, and offers to run it for you or allow a test ride. I.E. take my bike for $5000, you will be hard pressed to find a faster, cleaner and better kept bike for less! Hell a new 400 is $4700!

 

Does not add any real value....unless someone is looking for one all done.

 

I'll go one farther. Mods decrease the value of a quad. As has been mentioned above, most buyers view a modded quad as one that has been abused. If you kept the stock parts then you'll get more money for the quad if you put it back stock.

 

You guys are very sharp today,I agree with you all.I know that the pipe I installed will NOT be on my Xplorer when I sell it.I'll let the Mudrunners and plow go with it though.I just tell any potential customer that the dealership sold me the tires when I purchased the quad and said that they would REALLY wake up my traction when plowing snow,it makes sense.Add on's,especially engine mods,will kill the sale.Its best to sell the quad in its STOCK form.
