how to change a 4x4Scrambler into a 2wd?whos done it?

I couldn't find it in the archives converting the 4x4 Scrambler into a 2wd but I do remember seeing it somewhere. I was wondering on what you do w/ the shaft sticking out of the transfer case, can it be removed & hows the hole plugged & after removing the front drive shafts how do you plug the hole into the bearings or do you change to 2wd front ends? My plan is only to keep it 2wd for summer & change it back to 4wd for fall & winter.
Thanks any help would be great.

Jim, that was probably me who posted the convert to 2wd scambler thread.
I simply left the shaft sticking out of the transfer case, It really does no harm down there. As for the front hubs. I left the front cv boots on and packed them full of grease and then went to my local hardware store and picked up some threaded PVC caps. They are MALE caps if you know what I mean. And I used two small radiator hose clamps to hold them in the CV boots. You still need to make sure your front hubs have hub fluid in them. Also, I left all of the electrical components attached. If you plan on putting the front gear box back on, you might want to reconsider. I haven't tried to yet. But I imagine it won't be easy.

If you didn't remove the front transfer case, then why did you remove the 4wd in the first place, wasn't it to reduce weight? I want to remove the 4wd weight for my summer MX riding & then put it back on for the fall/winter Pa riding. I will definately be removing the front transfer case. I was looking at it & it doesn't look all that bad & my mechanic said it was easy also so I'll let you know in the spring when I take it off. Thats a good idea you have of just plugging the boots. It's $500 cheaper than having to buy new front lower strut mounts, front hub & front bearings to convert it to 2wd. I'm not sure how much more weight is in these 3 parts on the 4wd than on the 2wd. I cant find these 3 parts used at any salvage yards only the jap brands. Last summer I went to 5 MX tracks so that would work out to $100 per visit if I do decide to buy the new parts.
Thanks for the help.

Jim, just to clear things up. I did remove the front gear box. That is the part where the front drive shaft and two swing arm drive shafts connect to one another. When I was referring to the transfer case I was actually referring to the transmission. My bad.

I'd really appriciate it if you could please weigh the front wheel drive transfer case & 3 drive shafts that you took off? I am so curious I cant stand to wait until next spring when I take mine off to weigh it. I'm trying to plan the whole 2wd conversion package. I'd really like to capture the 45lb weight difference between the stock 4wd & 2wd models if possible plus the 55lbs I already took off I should be in better shape for jumping. I found the most accurate way to weigh parts is to weigh myself on a scale & then pick up the parts to get the difference or the weight of the parts. If you tell me the 4wd parts only weigh about 15lbs then I will start now really looking into the most cost effective way to get off the rest of the weight debating between changing to the 2wd front hubs & lower struts or the HPD lightweight transfer case & mods to the frame I'll have to do to accept it. I sure hope it's more than 15lbs though.
Thanks so much,

i've done it this fall and the results are impressive,i've changed my gearcase for a 2wd one, removed all shaft and 4x4 system, got an instant acceleration gains, more top end as well and this engine feel a lot more performant with the 2wd and reducing weights, enjoy.
