my friends 2001 ho with 2000 miles 4x4 system is acting strange.sometimes it will kick in with out even being in 4x4.and sometimes it will only kick in one front tire.we changed the fluid in it twice with the polaris hub oil and it made no difference.we unplugged the small wires that go the hub coils on both front wheels and it is not as bad.but now when i ride a wheely on it it will jerk back and forth like the wheels are trying to engage.he is really upset with his atv right now and wanting rid of it if this cant be fixed.any one know what could fix this?

Well, if you tried changing the hub oil with the Polaris stuff, go one farther, and try Mobil 1 synthetic type F ATF fluid. This seems to be a little 'slicker' and helps keep the hubs from sticking.

If this doesn't do the trick, re-torque the front wheel hub center bolt. I think the torque is 100 in/lb, and if the cotter pin won't align with the hole, tighten farther until it does, not to exceed 125 in/lb.
You can try re-torquing first, if you like, it won't hurt anything to check it, but you might want to double-check my numbers, as I am just going from memory.

If that still doesn't cure it, check the roller spring tension on the hilliard assembly.
