There is one at my work that is being raffled, and my co-workers think it will wheelie. I've never had a chance to ride one.

I don't think it will, due to a few considerations:
1. 597lbs.(am I correct on the weight?)
2. Automatic
3. There is the weight of the front diff., racks(this one is equipped with the custom chrome ones), and radiator on the frond tires.
4. Won't the IRS just sag?
5. Traction pattern on the rear tires.

So, will it? Thanks for any responses.

(Note: A real wheelie. Not hitting a bump in the trail, or landing at high speed on the rear tires off a ledge)

Nothing against Polaris, just seeing if my ATV intuition is right

697 lbs. is the real weight. I bet all Sportsman owners wish it was 597 lbs. Anyway, some say they like the weight and some don't, while others say they don't even notice it. It is a real kick a$$ utility quad, not made for wheelies and jumps. The IRS sags a little, but not too noticeably unless carrying a heavy load, then you'll notice some sag. It is the smoothest ride in the industry, keeping all four wheels on the ground for superior traction. It is an awesome trail, MUD, ROCKS, and work quad, again, not made for sport riding. Some may claim it wheelies, but the guys I know can't really do many wheelies with that beast. If anyone can honestly do wheelies on their SP500, take it easy on me, I didn't know.

I wheelied my Sportsman400 i roll down a hill backwards (Not to fast) then nail the throttle the front wheels whill come right up.
Very fun but not as safe as a sport quad. (Not smart)

I stand corrected. 697 lbs!!!

Ok, neither of these techniques (in my opinion) are legit.

When you are riding down a rough trail, and there is a log coming up, you do not have the time, (and can't hold on) when you are riding on your knees.

Any more input?

A non HO sp500 can wheelie if you put clutch kit in it. my 2000 sp500 will do wheelies from low range now that it has a clutch kit. but don't get me wrong if what you are wanting is a banshee or raptor type 3rd and 4th gear wheelies I think you are out of luck with an sp500.

My brother has a stock 96 SP and can wheelie it in high range if you floor it and wait a second before sitting down hard on the back of the seat while pulling hard on the handlebars. In low range it's preety much the same but you don't have to jerk it as hard.

My cousin has an HO and it's the same as the non HO.On my xplorer i don't have to jerk it as hard in high range and in low i'm just sitting on the bike and floor it and up she goes..

If you feel yourself going over backwards to far just tap the rear brake a little. We have bumpers on our bike so sometimes we will let it go over backwards slowly and it will stop standing up.Just stick it in reverse and down she goes..

It takes some practice but after a while you get the hang of it and can go pretty far on 2 wheels, sometimes up to 40 mph.

The other day there were a bunch of high performance quads parked on the side of a large logging road,me and my brother stopped side by side and floored the bikes together,by the time we went by them we were going around 30 mph. The expression on there faces was priceless.

P.S If you don't have a rear bumper and you go to far back while doing a wheelie you will drag on you rear rack and probaly end up breaking it or scraping it pretty bad .Believe me i know. Also if the front end is in the air try not to jam the rear brake to hard or let of the gas all of a sudden because the front end will hit the ground hard and it's tough on the bike.Hope this helps.

I never tried doing a wheelie with my 99 Sportsman tell I read it on this forum. After reading it I went out and put my Sportsman in low floored it and pulled up on the handlebars and up she went. I found it really easy to pull wheelies.
