Dealer wants over 400+ dollars to fix sportsman 500 sounds fishy

I recently tried putting a spring kit on my sportsman, however i ended up lowering the hub housing too far aparently which caused the drive shaft to come out of the hub. I couldnt get it back in so i took it into the dealer. Keep in mind when i ralized the tire would not roll with the others i knew what had happened, and did not attempt to drive the machine, hell we used a forklift to take it off at the dealer. Anyways he calls me a day later with this crap that i broke the drive shaft and it would cost around 230 dollars plus labor to fix. I just cant believe i broke it as careful as i was but i cannot see beyond the boot to tell. Im going to ask him for the broken part when i get back there to see if he is tellin the truth. Personally i think its a scam to jack me for more money. Do they break really easy? What do you all think????

Man, I feel sorry for you. If you cant trust you dealer then your at their mercy. My dealer, which is Splash Fever in Overton Nevada are quite the opposite. If Dan the mechanic sees anything wrong he will fix it, but he will not only let you know before he does it, he will let you watch him do the service or whatever he is doing to the quad. He is a very upfront kind of guy...... For example I took my new 700 in for him to see and he rode it and didnt like the way the clutching sounded so he inspected it and the belt was already worn badly. He put a new belt on then took it for another ride then reinspected and saw that the belt had worn again in that very short ride. He then put in an entire new clutch for me and a new belt. I took it for a 70 mile ride then he reinspected the clutch and it was perfect. He did not charge me one cent for this. He also rejetted the quad for me to for no charge.......the place where I bought it in Utah had misunderstood what I had wanted and didnt jet the quad properly...........I do all of my business with Splash Fever............

I cant see how you could have broken it!When you raised up the atv with a jack and let the hub down to get the spring over the strut the joint pulled out due to the hub and strut assy. dropping down to far,if you put the wheel back on tried to turn it while tighting up the lugs you would have noticed it.Even if you got on and cranked it up and tryed to ride it you would have noticed or even heard a loud poping sound.I did the same thing while putting on my springs I took the spring off the boot cover with a set of snap ring pliers so I could see the shaft to align it up,I will say this was not a easy job It took about six attempts before I got It right but even at that I would take the spring off the boot and pull the rubber back to see if it was broken. If it is broken it will have to be replaced anyway what do you have to loose.

Are you talking about the rear or the front? I have taken the whole rear end apart and replaced the u-joints on my 1998 Sportsman. I doubt your shaft is broken, if fact, I can hardly believe it is. If it is the rear, it might be that the yoke shaft tube might be worn or the knuckles are out of spec. If thats the case then his price (for both sides) is about right.

I too doubt it is broken. I had to have one replaced on my HO after rolling it over in tellico. The front wheel hit a huge rock pretty hard on its tumble down. It was two weeks later that I even realized that it was bad. I first noticed a wobble in the wheel and upon investigation discovered there was grease on the inside of the wheel. It was coming from the cv joint. Turns out the crash cracked the cv joint. Part was $170. The reason I doubt you broke anything is 1.) Mine smacked that rock hard to crack it and 2.) I have replace the front springs on mine and I just don't remember doing anything that could cause that much damage. I would say that if it is broken, it must have been damaged before.
