I have installed quite a few of those. What you need to do is grind down those stubs. You need to buy a grinder head for a drill, if you don't have access to a grinder. You can buy them just about anywhere for $10.
Unscrew the cap of the new handle, drill a hole through the middle section top. You will see that there is already a dimple in the aluminum, perfect for starting your drill bit. Put one of the plastic sheaves over the shifter rod, and lightly tap the new **** down over it, put the factory screw back in, and screw the cap back on.

I have a shifter from Autozone also for my Sportsman. I just took the cap off my old one and screwed it off and put my new one on. The new one fit right on, and it has a set screw I tighted. It was the skull head and it doesn't fit over the little things that stick out on the shifter. Just a little info

I am bummed out! I thought I was the only one with a skull gear shift ****... Now I feel like I am wearing the same new out fit as everyone else to the first day of school!
Just kidding. I have gotten a lot of looks from people on the trail and it ticks my wife off.

My shift **** / small crome skull fit snug and only has an inch or so of depth to it so I never came in contact with the metal flanges. They are still intact in case I want to put the original back on and they are irrelevant to the custom one I got. I would not want to have to grind them off because you are now stuck with the custom ****... or have to buy another original shift arm if you want to go back to stock.
