Polaris says their rear brakes are not supposed to lock up, by design. They are intended to be an auxiliary brake, only. My local dealer just spent numerous hours on a Polaris (and I believe it was a Scrambler). He bled the brake system several times, replaced the pads, rebuilt the caliper - that was only as much as he told me. He was disgusted because the thing still would not lock up. He called the factory and spoke to them about it and they told him that it was, absolutely, not supposed to lock up. It was only to be used for an auxiliary brake.

Not sure if this also goes for the older models, but yours is an '01 and the one he was working on was also an '01.

Since you asked - my '99 Scrambler 400 4x4 will lock up the rears if I really stand on the foot brake without touching the hand lever at all, in loose dirt or mud, not on anything hard.

Sorry, didn't see your last question on your original post. No, not all Scramblers were HO motors. They were all 400 2-strokes until '97 when they introduced the 500 4-stroke to satisfy California, I believe and other environmentally conscious places. In '97, however, the 500 in the Scrambler was a DOG. It was eaten alive by the 400 (stock to stock). The went back and redesigned the 500 engine and reintroduced the 500 in the '98 model year and they were designated as the 500 HO. All 500 Scramblers since then have been the 500 HO. Said to be about a 20% power increase and supposed to be neck and neck with the 400 (stock to stock).

Older Polaris without the new hydralic rear brake have a mechanical auxilary foot brake that is worthless. It has to be adjusted perfectly and then only works once or twice. I remove them as a service feature anytime I have the right foot board off. It only rattles and gets in the way. I prefer to use the single handle any way even in race conditions.

Hey ScramblerShadow,
How do you like your Dirt Devil tires? I am thinking really seriously about putting a set on my wife's Scrambler.
