I was planning on taking a trip to glamis in march and was considering getting a pipe for my scram. I'm pretty set on a RcR or HPD. I'm thinking that I might need some more horses to tackle the bigger hills. There are some pretty good sized dunes where I live but probably not like glamis. I don't have any trouble climbing the one's around here with my stock pipe. I really don't like the stall that accompanies the install of a new pipe and spring. I really like the lower clutch engagement of the stock setup. I was hoping to get some advice on what pipe/clutch spring-kit to buy. I would appreciate any help that is given. Thanks

Hey what's up duneaholic, I got a 2000 Scram 400 2x4 with the Hpd trail pipe, a Hpd clutch kit, and a RcR airbox mod and re-jetted of course for the pipe etc. I go to Glamis all the time, and I couldn't be happier with any of these mods. My quad dominates every dune even (the steepest). If you get an Hpd trail pipe, clutch-kit, and an Hpd high performance muffler you're gonna be thrilled. I was leary of the higher engagement too duneaholic, so the clutch kit I got was just a slightly higher engagement than stock, and it is really great (Awesome acceleration). You will have no problem with the major hills like Oldsmobile and Comp hill with the Hpd pipe/clutch. It was a huge improvement over stock. Not to sound repetitive, but I'd call Rick Ritter (RcR) and he will steer you straight with no pressure to buy anything you don't need(He's got the HPD stuff too). I consider my mods minor dough for what you get, it was like $380 for all. I still got the crappy stock muffler too (soon to be ditched) and it still kicks ***. I recommend the airbox mod for $35 huge difference for the $. Have fun, hope to see you out there fellow Scram rider! Oh yeah, don't forget with the HPD pipe you need at least to run 92 octane minimum. I mix 91 (that's highest pump gas in Cali) with 110.

Hey thanks csonkters for the info. That's sets my mind at ease quite a bit on the trip to Glamis. I've read a lot about the Hpd pipe and can't imagine going with anything else. I have a FMF turbine core 2 silencer and really like the sound of it plus it keeps me USFS legal. I also have a Boyesen Rad Valve and it helped some on top end. So is there a really big difference in clutch engagement with the pipe or does it come with a clutch kit? Thanks again for the info.

Call Rick Ritter at RCR and get a Stage 1 kit with a HPD Trail pipe ( delete the silencer, have him put in a violet secondary clutch spring in it's place ). You'll be Pi$$ed at Polaris for not building them like this from the factory, that's how much of a difference they make.

I'm running a Jet-Hot coated HPD Trail Pipe with the FMF silencer on a 2000 400 Scram 2X4, so I can tell you from experience that the combo works.
Also, the changes to the clutch make it launch a LOT HARDER, it's not difficult to get used to the change in the way the quad runs.
You didn't say if it was a 2X4 or a 4X4, if it's a 2X4, you may want to disable the reverse rev limiter, as the clutch engagement will be just slightly lower than the limiter kicks in.

I'm very sure that RCR recommends at least a primary clutch spring change with a Midrange pipe. The change in clutching is to help the engine run in it's most efficient RPM range. The new pipe moved the torque & HP peaks up in the RPM range, the clutch kit allows the drivetrain to take advantage of the increases.

The RCR Stage 1 kit is the best "Bang-For-The-Buck" out there. It's a bunch more than just a pipe and a clutch spring. Don't settle for less if you can afford it.

Dune i was once at the same road you are at.
First ask yourself if you want to stop there or step up to Full race later on.
If you think you will be happy and not want to step up to race the combo i ran was great in the dunes. HPD Trail pipe RCR silencer (LOUD) HPD clutch kit Uni filter in box. If you dont do to much mud then save the money on the airbox mod kit, and just cut the whole front curved area out better flow less water and mud protection though. Diff. bike really diff. But like I said MAKE SURE you dont want to go all out I ran the HPD trail pipe for a full WEEK two rides before it was sold, not that I didnt like it but I decide to go all out.

OK, anyone please respond.

I have the RCR Stage 1 setup using HPD Trail pipe. I was wondering, why drill the third hole on the airbox and use the Uni-filter when I could remove the outer aribox lid and run the stock air filter with only the inner airbox lid on?

Seems to me if you don't require a lot of water and mud protection then would it not be a better air flow to run the factory air filter with the inner air box lid without the outer air box lid on?

Chunky

PS I am not interested in running a K&N air filter bolted on back of the carb and no airbox.

Yeah, duneaholic I forgot about the stage 1 kit that RcR sells. You can tell Rick what kind of clutch performance you want and he will give you the right springs for exactly the kind of engagement that you want. The engagement is really great with the springs that I got (forgot what colors), it won't be too drastic, You'll like it duneaholic.

Thanks again everyone for the great advice. I think I'm gonna call Rick and get me a Hpd Stage 1 kit w/o the silencer. Here is a link with a couple of Pics of my Scram. http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/adamsspecialty. It's really cool to be able to get other people's opinions and thoughts on things like these since there's really no where else to look for advice. Again thanks.
