Turbocharger for scrambler
#1
Hey i have heard that a company called GP enginnering out of Garden City, Kansas makes a turbo charger and efi kit for the scrambler 500. IS this true? Has anyone ever seen one? And if so can you give me some info about it, like what kind of gains does it give (i'm guessing alot!) and what does it costs (again i'm guessing alot)And can i still run pump gas. And how reliable would it be. Well i'm asking to many questions. But any help will be appreciated.

99 Scram500,
I was at the local Polaris dealer on Wednesday night and he mentioned that he and two of his salesmen were going to a show next week that would have a turbocharged Scrambler 500 doing a dyno test. From what he understood it was a kit that "bolted on" to an otherwise stock motor. I recently read were a stock Banshee produced 93 hp with the same mod. I'll stop by the dealer's next week for some more info.

Sounds coool, and can you try and find out who makes the kit and all that. I heard that the pvt can't handle over 70hp so i'm guessing it probably makes around 60 or 65. I hope they race it against some other quads, like a bnahsee and stuff.

I also read the article in Dirt Wheels on the turbo'd Banshee and was wondering "what if?". The article said everything on the Banshee was stock and anyone could bolt it right up themselves...their hp numbers were 130+. I'd absolutely love to see one on a Polaris. Keep an ear open and post what ya'll find out.

Whoa, a turbocharger! Whats next, fuel injection, NOS, headers, Hurst shifter. I feel like I'm reading Hotrod magazine. Best of luck to ya should you get this awesome performance increase. Still overheating and puttering at 44mph.....

The PVT system used on Polaris ATV's are not the same as a snowmobile. They function in the same way but are not as large and use a smaller belt.

The kit for the Banshee was $5600 bucks and ran on alcohol,It said you couldnt let it set with fuel in it for more than 12 hours because the alcohol was corosive to the engine,They also said these kits were built to order only and they didnt recomend useing the stock pistons because of the drastic power increase, For that kind of dough I would just buy another qaud!!

Well i've done alittle reading about turbos, and its is possible have a turbo and run it on pump gas. Sport Rider put a turbo kit on a cbr900 and it ran well on pump gas and boosted hp from around 130 to 170. It has to depend on the PSI that the turbo is running at. If its set around 8 psi you can run it with regular gas, but you won't get as much boost, but if its set around say 20 psi it will need alchohol cuz if you run gas it will over heat. and there is an incredible increase in power (like the banshee) The scrambler kit shouldn't cost anywhere near as much as the bansheee because I seriously doubt it would make 130 hp, and it probably doesn't run on alcohol.
I really don't see why turbos aren't more popular, since they can be bolted on and are much easier to do than stroker kits, and produce way more power. They also keep the engine fairly reliable. About alchohol, i was just reading an article about alchhol and the writer said it didn't corrode the engine any more than gas, actually he said it was better because it ran much cooler. I don't see why letting it sit would corrode the engine.
Now wouldn't it be interesting to see a 510cc fully modified, alcohol burning, turbocharged, NOS banshee?
Anyway, hopefully this turbo kit still keeps the bike reliable, while still able to run gasoline, at a decent price, and makes close to 70hp (or more if the clutch can hold up. Maybe puttin on a dayco belt would allow for more hp) If it was true i'd be the first in line!
If anyone has any more info about the company i'd really appreciate. Someone might try doing a search for turbo under performance mods cuz thats one of the places i remember reading about it but every time i try to do a search it says an error has occured.

HEAT!!!... Heat is one MAJOR reason that turbos aren't widely used on ATV engines... You would end up with a bunch of rednecks strappin' turbos on the 28"Vamp'ed Sportsman and throwing it in the deepest mudhole he could find... Just to see if it would come out!!
No, seriously... the engine oil takes a beating when trying to cool the turbo... I am guessing that the turbo kit will have an additional oil cooler or accumulator.. 1 3/4 qts. probably won't keep the bearings alive very long with the turbo covered in mud on a 95 degree July day...
Well, all this is addition to COST!!...
