HSP chain tensioner on Scram400

Anyone run one of these? I just bought one since I seem to be adjusting my chain a lot on my 96 400 Scram. There seems to be a fine line between too tight (and possibly breaking a chain on a jump) and too loose (skipping the chain on stutter-bumps). How well will this piece hold up in the mud? Will my chain start taking a beating with the stock plastic guard removed?

TTT....nobody has run an aftermarket chain tensioner?

They work quite well. I installed one on a buds non-concentric drive, and it works great. They now even have them for the concentric drive units as well.

My buddy had an HPD one. He broke the spring in it about every other hour.

I have the concentric one on my '99 Scrambler 400 4x4. Be careful where you locate it on the swingarm, I go t mine a little close and the chain rubbed and wore off the end of the grease fitting. The fitting really should have been designed to be on the other side where it would have been easier to get to anyway. I had to remove the stock plastic chain thingy and then cut off its metal bracket from the swingarm . And finally, I also had to cut a section out of my aftermarket Moose aluminum skid plate. But with all that said, it does work well. I used to have to adjust my chain every ride, often during the ride. Now the tensioner takes up all the slack. I think a loose chain slapping around makes itself more and more loose, because now even when I remove the pressure from the tensioner to check the true slack in the chain, I rarely need to tighten it. It's worth its relatively low cost.

I run one. They are good for about three years and then you have to buy new ones. IMHO they are worth the money. About the chain stretch, are you running a good quality chain? There really is no substitute for quality with a rear drive chain. I prefer the X rings myself. EK has a chain that is supposed to have a 8400 lb tensile strength and is supposed to be the best out there. STAY AWAY FROM SIDEWINDER! Too many people on this forum have gotten burned by them!

There's the lively discussion I was hoping for! Thanks fellas! I put it on last night....had to cut the bracket off the swingarm for the old plastic thing. Looks like it should do the job. Hell, for 50 bucks, if it lasts the season and neads to be replaced...it's worth it.
