The cost difference between the two atv's is only $500. What do you think is the best deal??

Personally, I think the X looks cooler if you believe it's worth the money. Otherwise, I've dragged a 500 4x4 with my 400 4x4, dead nuts thorught the entire powerband. From there, I guess the only thing left to compare besides look is the 400 is a little lighter and is cheaper to modify...otherwise, both are exellent machies...anything else is a 2-stroke/4-stroke preference.

Stock, they perform very similarly, with the 400 being a little lighter.
Add $500 in mods to the 400, and you can have a SCREAMER that will leave the 500s in the dust. I would wait until warranty is over, though, before I did any mods. They end all warranty coverage to say the least.

How do you intend to ride?
I'd say a 400. I would have done it if I knew the smog police realy didn't pay attention to the 2 storke laws out here.

Ride both of them. A lot of people say that the 400 and 500 are the same, maybe the numbers (accel/top speed) look the same, but if you ride them, you will notice they feel totally different. I prefer the low end grunt of the 500 on tight trails. I like the 400's mid range and top end power on more open trails and dunes. If you plan on adding mods, then the 400 would be much cheaper.

I would have to say go with the 400. Like everyone said if you put that extra $500 into the 400 it will outperform the 500 easy, SMOKE IT actually. They are about the same machine chassis wise , so trail performance will be about the same in stock form. The 400 is a little lighter and you gain that 2 stroke snap.
As far as noise, In stock form you can't tell much difference. If you change the Silencer a 4 stroke they are very loud compared to the piped 2 stroke IMPO.

From you mid post I think you want to know the difference between a 400 4x4 and the 400X 4x4. There is not much difference. 2000 was the last year for the 400 4x4 Scrambler. Polaris brought it back as a special addition in 2002, the 400 X. The Main difference would be Looks (Color, COLORED Chassis Parts, AND GRAPHICS). There are some improvements compared to the 2000MY. 1. Better Brakes (Steel Braided Lines and Drilled Rotors) 2. Better Steering (Thicker post with lower bearing) 3. Different ignition switch 4. FACTORY ALUMINUM WHEELS (Still Painted Gray).
All of these Improvement items would be on the 2002 500 Scrambler Also (Except Aluminum Wheels).

I actually ordered a 400 X before I got my 2000 400 4x4. I could not pass on this one due to LARGE savings. The Dealer got my bike as a NEW RE-PO. The bike was new still in the box, I got it for $3899.00.
I believe the 400X is going for $5200.00 at my dealer.

Hello Kenboo,

I happen to own them both. I bought a 400x and a Trail Boss for my son and I. My Dad got hooked immediately, so I had to buy another machine. I was going to buy another 400, but a 500 became available before the dealer could get a 400x. I really like both machines. The 400 has the zip that the 500 doesn't. but the 500 seems to have more *****. Both my machines are stock. If I could do it all over again, I believe I would buy two 500's. I'm not looking for them to be any faster, and unless you want to mod them, I think I like the 4 stroke better. It seems to be more dependable, less noisy, less smokey. I am NO expert working on these machines, so I might feel differently if I were. But for a newbie like me, the 500 is the answer. Hope this helps.

p.s. We took all three machines to Coal Creek in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. All three performed quite well. Even the Trail Boss kept up with the other two rather remarkably. One more thing, I did put new rims and tires on the 400/500. The stock ones were junk. We had them beat up pretty good. I bought ITP Holeshot XCT with 190 douglas rims. They did great on the rocky mountain trails in Coal Creek. Great place to ride, by the way.

Scott
