Ok, the problem started all of a sudden but progressively got worse, I have no power on a 95 mag. 425 4x4. starts fine idles fine but goes to backfireing and poping once you pass idle. It is also blowing black smoke and leaving a lot of carbon on the spark plug anfter running for a minute or two. I changed the plug cleaned the carb, checked the mag, checked the timing chain, checked the ETC, and just about all I could think of but it still has no power. oh yeah, I put fresh gas in it too. I am so tired and out of ideas, anybody got any more??? I really don't want to have to pay someone to fix this..

Thanks,,

I have done the oil and air filter, but have'nt checked the exaust pipe, I will try that next. Shoot, if that does'nt work I don't know what to do. I just bought this wheeler for 2K, thought I got a pretty good deal, but if I can't get it running right I got shafted. Sad part is it ran great the first 2 days I had it. Did you pull the main jet to make sure there isn't and trash in it, you might check the fuel filter. Hope this helps.

Did you get a whole new air filter, or just clean it? I remeber awhile back someone posted similar symptoms and it was because even thought their filter looked clean, it was just so old it didn't flow as well. Try pulling the air filter all together and running it just for a minute to check

I believe I have pulled the air filter and ran it without it, but I will try again, I will keep everyone posted as to what I find. I am about an inch away from putting a match to it.

Okay... With the cover off of the ETC, are the points remaining open as you roll open the throttle? Chances are this is the primary culprit.

Popping and backfing sounds electrical. What is the general condition of your primary ignition system? Are all of your ground straps in place? Magnums have a tendancy to break the strap attached to the cylinder. Not to mention the leads to the starter.

Choke... Does it make a difference on the choke position how the engine will run. In other words, if the engine is idling , when you move the choke to half, will the engine idle change? If it does, good. If it doesn't you have an improperly adjusted choke or the choke circuit is stuck in the open position. When you move it to high will the engine stall? If it does, good.

Carb... Did you drain the float bowl?

Coil... a defective coil will fail under load and heat.

(When everything else fails drive it over to the house of Greg Sims

ok, Lets see...With the cover off the ETC the points seem to close when I open up the throttle, but I just looked at it and I have been reading a lot about slack in the throttle cable, I just checked it and there is a "little" slack in the cable not a whole lot but there is some slack. I have not checked ground straps, this will be next. On the choke: when it is idleing it will kill the engine if I open up the choke, but if I am giving it throttle while riding it doesn't make a difference I can open the choke all the way when giving throttle and it runs the same(crappy). I did clean the carb bowl, as well as every part of the carb. looks like I might be having to take it to gregg sims...
