Question about sprokets larger/smaller?????

Ok i have a 2000 trail boss with a rcr stage one kit on it.The prob is my bike has great low end but i would like more top end .Right now my bike tops out at 53mph.My question is should i go 1 or 2 teeth bigger or smaller on the sproket.Also what kind of increase can i expect speed wise.I know i will lose low end but i dont care cause i am gonna order a 414 kit pretty soon.Thanks in advance for any and all of your guys help..

Well I dont know how much faster you'll go but I believe you should go to a smaller sprocket. Think of it like the rear gears on a 10 speed bike, the smaller the sprocket the faster you go but it gets hard to petal.

actually, brickman is wrong, the bigger the sprocket the more top end. the smaller the sprocket the more low end. i am not sure about how much Low end you will loose, i have been told if you change clutch springs, have it piped, or clutch kit you wont notice anylost low end from stock...


PS how is it you top out at only 53??!!?!? My trailblazer 250 with a Hotseatperformance Pipe and clutch kit tops out at about 55 - 57.. 60 on friends wheelers speedo(also depending on weather) 57 next to my moms car.

Actually 98trailblazer, i dont think i'm wrong. Go back to my illustration of the 10 speed. Leaving the front sprocket alone, if you go to the largest gear/sprocket on the rear then the bike is very easy to petal but doesnt go anywhere fast. However, go to the the smallest sprocket and it gets hard to petal but you go much much faster. Your bigger is faster and smaller slower applies to tire sizes. If you lower the tire size you effectively increase your sprocket size and therefore have faster takeoff but lower top end and visa versa.

You guys might want to clarify if you're talking about the front or rear sprocket.The larger the front sprocket the more top speed with a sacrifice to the low end power. The smaller rear sprocket has the same effect. Changing one front tooth is about equal to changing 3 on the rear. If your front is a stock 12 tooth you might try a 13 tooth.You also have to consider if your engine has enough power to pull max rpm's with the higher gear ratio.If not, you might not see much a speed improvement. Also the front can be changed 1 tooth without affecting the chain length.

Thanks for the help guys..I don't know about my top speed i was just guessing.. maybe its higher than i think.Any other info anyone has would be great
