I have an opportunity to buy a 1994 xpolrer 400 with a locked up motor. My questions are:
Is this a 2 stroke or 4 stroke?
How hard and how expensive are parts?
Are these 2x4 or 4x4?
What would be the resale after fixing the motor?

It is in in good shape from the pictures. I have not personally looked at it yet. I just wanted some feedback from the experts before making a decision.

Its a 2 stroke 4x4 with swing arm rear. chain drive fron and rear. I'm guessing running it would be worth $2500-$3500. Brother had one an dthe motor went. dealer did total rebuilt for around $1200, thats from the crank right straight thru it.

I think they didn't start making Xplorers untill '95. In 93, it was the 350L 4x4, in 94 it was the 400L 4x4, and in 95 it was the Xplorer 400L 4x4. They were actually pretty similar mechanically, but the 95 had a cosmetic makeover.

It depends if it's just a piston lock or what the total problem is, but without knowing, I wouldn't pay more than $800-1000 for the machine, not to say that it can't be given a little loving care and fixed up, but before offering a final price you might want to have a look at it in person and give it a look.

I have many times bought an older machine that the engine was blown or locked up and don't be too ready to give them a fortune for it I bought a 1999 blaster that would'nt run for $300 and several other machines for about the same .... If its not running and they have not fixed it yet there is a good chance they just want to get it out of the way... try to get it for $200 or a little more but if they were that intrested in it they would fix it there selves.

good luck

p.s. If it does not run its not worth anywhere close to a running price. Because you can not check any thing out the trinny could be bad or anything else.

92LT,
Thanks for the heads up about the year models. It is advertised as a 94 xplorer, so either it is a 94 400L or a 95 xplorer.

Realoldguy,
I too have seen blasters and many older ATV's for $300 or less. I have also read the posts in this forum about xplorers and their piston problems. This one is pretty complete with no problems with the plastic. Even if i give them what they want, I can rebuild a 2 stroke and still come out $1000-1500 ahead. I am not a Polaris fan personally but I do want my fiance to go ride with me and this may be a perfect way to get her involved w/o a lot of money involved. Or I can sell it and get another sport model.
Then one question noone has answered yet is:
How expensive and how hard is it to find parts?
