Scrambler frame powdercoating
#1
Has anyone powdercoated their scrambler frame? I have a 95 4x4 that I am in the process of rebuilding and need some help. I would like to have the floorbords taken off before getting the frame done but they seem to be riveted. Can you leave them attached but get them powdercoated a different color? I had my blaster powedercoated but it was a lot easier than this. Any help would be appreciated.

The floorboars are screwed/bolted on. I could be wrong with your's being a 95. All the better reason to cut things off and install nerfs. Head on over to Hotseatperformance.com they have some pics to tease you with. You can mod a set of DG or AC Banshee nerfs to fit....sorry to get off topic there. Normally (on the later models) the foot-grips (jagged piece on the floorboard) are normally riveted on. Those can stay on the floorboard after you unbolt them. You can also get an aluminum set of boards off a later model 4X4 and save some lbs. That also goes for the front tubular bumper...it's also aluminum on the later 4X4 models. The powder coating provides an extremely chip-resistant coating, that's what's on the later model frames from the factory. Lots of colors available also.

I looked at my floorboards again and they are riveted on. Also the battery case is welded to the frame. I talked to a local shop and he has to look at it for sure but he thinks he can powdercoat the frame one color and powdercoat the floorboard and battery case black. I have to get it completely torn down and let him look at it.

dillas23,
If you are talking about your 1995 Scrambler, then the floorboards are riveted on. Most of the guys here with newer machines naturally assume that bolting was the way they always did it. Not so. The concentric drive machines started the bolted floorboard trend, so it is easier to install footpegs (and nerfs) on the newer models.
Just use a 3/16" drill to drill out the pop rivets and replace them with 3/16" STEEL pop rivets.

Mike,
Thanks for the reply. Do you know if other 4x4 transmissions will bolt into this frame? Also is the 500 plastic and the 400 interchangeable? I am taking off the oil injection and would like to get rid of the tank if possible. If the palstic is not interchangeable then I may may a reserve gas tank out of it.

See Lee, I told you I could be wrong....and I was, thanks for clearing that up Mike. The plastic on the 400,500, and Trailblazers is interchangeable, but you just have to watch the front cover. 500 won't have the opening for the oil injection resevoir (what better reason to remove your oil injection), and some of the lights were located on the nose pieces, the dealers parts manuals should show the big picture.
