I have a 00 sportsman and the shift lever has stuck in the reverse postion 2 times on me. It really sticks bad you can not move it at all. I had to spray oil on the linkage on the gearbox. Then with a hammer I had to tap the (rod end?) and then it broke free. The linkage was adjusted recently and it seem really nice and positve the rest of the time. This did happen both times when I have just washed it and got on to move it. Do you guys oil the linkage on a regullar basis?

Your shifter on where the handle is has oil in it.It is a bit of a pain but you have to take the screws out of the top and lift the handle out.there should be enough oil to cover the shift rods.It is nothing but 10w40 oil.Hope this helps

do you know if the scramblers are the same way? I have a 97 scrambler 400 4x4. I don't think so because my **** just screws down into the shifter rod. Maybe I'm still a little confused.

The reason why I am so interested is because my scrambler is having trouble going into reverse. I mean, it feels like it goes into gear but sometimes I'll have to put in back in neutral and then back in reverse to get it to engage. Does this sound like this might be the trouble? I have readjusted the linkage and I'M SURE that is not the problem. And I really don't think it is in the tranny.
