Slight smoke is normal with petroleum based oils. With the newer synthetics, such as Polaris Gold, you should see no smoke if everything is jetted correctly. Either the previous owner has a lesser quality oil in the tank or your jetting is slightly off. Check your plug. If it's dark brown to black, your jetting is lean. Does it smoke all the time? If it only does it when idling, turn your air screw out a 1/4 turn at a time to see if it clears up.

Yes, too rich. One of these days I'll learn to proof read.

A 230 seems a little rich for 5-6000 ft. I live in Texas at about sea level and I ran a 230 until I modded mine. Always jet tothe rich side. If all you do is trail ride running rich won,t hurt.

At least when it is smoking you know you are oiling. That is why I dont run a synthetic 2 stroke oil.And a little rich wont hurt any thing if you arent fouling plugs dont mess with it.If you lean it out just a little too much you will burn a hole in a piston.

I think you are probably jetted too rich. That 230 main is for less than 3000 feet asl. It works great here in Iowa, but when I went to the Black hills and rode at 4500 to 6500 ft I had to jet down. I went down two sizes on the main and lowered the needle one notch. It ran great. That might be a place to start, but you should definitely still check plug color. When it's jetted right, it will run better. Good luck.
