I have some play in the steering of my 2000 scrambler. It seems to be coming from a bushing at the base of the steering post. The bushing is rivited in. Has anyone else had this problem? Can it be fixed? I was looking at a parts book and it look like there is a setup that bolts on insted of rivit. Can i change over to the bolt on bushing?

Goto hotseat performance and get the aluminum bushing takes about 30 minute to put in and helps a bunch.

ususally the rivets stretch and let the bushing move around.

and sometimes the bushing itself goes bad (well it is plastic)

hpd, and hotseats both sell solid metal bushings and you can uses bolts to put them on, just make sure the bolt heads don't protrude too much.

I bought one (steering stem bushing) from Rick Ritter Ritter Cycle Racing . I think hands down you get the best customer service from him, but you can also check out HPD or Hot Seat Performance for this MUCH better update from the Polaris stock bushing (I think they all offer pretty much the same one). All you have to do is drill out the old rivets, drill the mounting holes larger and install the new one with their supplied bolts and nylock nuts. (I had to use a 90 degree drill to get to the holes)

One suggestion, the HPD lower bushing is constructed so you can still drill and tap for a grease fitting. The new Hot Seat upper seem to help out upper steering rigidity. Keep an eye on your tie rod ends...pull the rubber boots back and give 'em a spray of lube frequently (pref, something like Tri-flo, it has teflon. Water is repelled by teflon)

I have purchased both the Hot Seat unit and the HPD unit. They were almost I dentical.
HPD $29.95
RCR $35.00
HSP #39.95

TAKE YOUR PIC

Also you asked if anyone else had the problem,Anyone with a Pre-2001 Polaris ATV Has or has had this problem.
2001 they put a Sealed Bearing at the bottom and larger steering shaft. So you can't just put in a 2001 bearing?
You would have to replace the shaft and also make changes to the lower frame mounting.
