Hey, I have a 1997 trail boss. The tranny grinds when ever I put it in forward. I thought this was a belt drived quad? Besdies for the drive chain which is not the issue. hmm. Any ideas on what it could be and how much it will take to refix it. Thanks!

Is the idle too high? If not, it sounds like your clutch is engaging, turning the tranny & drive chain, so it will not allow you to shift from neutral. Will it shift into gear while it's not running?

No, it will go into the forward gear with the engine running. Once i start to move it grinds like hell.
Thanks

Well Yeah. You cannot change gears on a PVT while in motion. You must be stopped and idling to change gears on any PVT quad I've ever seen.

i bet that the problem is that the drive gear is not engaging far enuff...i would think that a few washers would help solve the problem....

Well, i know that you cant shift like that. What im saying is that the quad is still. And the i put it into gear. And then it makes a griding noise when i press the throttle. Get it?

either your front sprocket has nubs for theeth or....

the silent chain in the gear case is stretched.
either from jumping and not letting off the gas before landing, lots of drivetrain abuse, or infrequent gearcase oil changes.

gonna need a new chain, and might wanna replace the shaft seals while ya got it apart. Just order those now, and if if your lucky you can tear into and fix it in one day.
If not, then you just gonna hve to order any aditianl parts that are damaged once you have it apart and see what condition everything is in.

but most of the time all ya need is the chain.

Ditto on what PolarisMech said.Dont let the idea of tearnig your gearcase apart it is easier to do the gearcase than it is to get it out.

Ok, so inside that gearbox there is another chain? I thought they were gears that dropped down and conntacted the shaft? I have not openened it yet.

2fastandfurious4u--are you going to tear it apart yourself,or are you going to the dealer??? i reccomend doing it yourself, because i have saved lots of money doing my own engine/other problem repairs...if you tear it apart, make sure that you dont loose any bolts/nuts/washers...they are important...also check the gaskets and make sure that they are not chewed the heck, and replace as neceassary...
